Geochang-gun was one of the numerous counties in South Gyeongsang Province that dotted the map of South Korea. The area was endowed with verdant valleys, lush green mountains, and the cerulean azure Hwang river that originated from there.
In a bijou house that appeared a bit timeworn yet elegant, was a young endearing girl. Her bright (E/C) coloured eyes pierced through the crystalline pellucid glass window, as she gazed out with a downcast glum expression.
She sighed as her thoughts wandered, thinking about a boy, about the same age as her. Kim Taehyung was his name. The two had been together for about 4 years now. They had grown immensely close and were practically inseparable. And yet destiny, in its traditional vindictive manner was going to smash their relationship into smithereens.
She gently glanced out the limpid window, observing her best friend converse with the neighbours. Taehyung was leaving for Daegu the very next day and thus he was paying respects to every house before he entered (Y/N)'s residence. Although the people of Geochang-gun were simple and unsophisticated, they valued each other and were akin to a close-bound family. They hugged him, sweetly showered him with affection, and bid him farewell.
He looked over at the last residence he had to visit, with a bit of distress. His parents had planned to send him to Daegu, to live with his grandma about 6 months ago but he had disclosed the news to (Y/N) only yesterday. Evidently, she was infuriated.
"Why didn't you tell me before? I-I could've treasured the time we spent a bit more! Constantly, time after time, you've always kept things hidden from me. Don't you trust me?", were the exact words she muttered as she dashed away with tears running down her cheeks. He had cursed himself numerous times that day, for he had never seen her cry so much before.
He, with a weary countenance, sighed as he knocked softly at the door of her house. (Y/N)'s mother unlocked the door and gazed at the boy. She smiled sadly as she embraced the boy with her warm loving arms.
"She's upstairs. Go on, she may be mad at you but she cares for you a lot. She's been looking out her window all day now waiting for you."
Taehyung slowly ascended up the stairs, wavering a bit. His hand stroked the doorknob of (Y/N)'s room, surprised to find it unlocked. He turned the knob ever so gently and entered the room.
There she was, looking out her window, ignoring his presence. He cautiously made his way toward her petite stature. She silently sat, unmoving.
"Look, I am sor- "
"Stop. Don't you dare try apologizing."
Taehyung gave out an exasperated sigh. Gently, he made his way toward her and said, "Just for today, forgive me. It's my last day here and I really don't want to spend it without you. Please?"(Y/N) looked at him, his caramel chocolate coloured eyes gazed at her pleadingly. Her conscience wavered looking at his tender expression. With a soft groan, she got to her feet and said, "Only for today. I'm still mad."
Taehyung lunged at her, enveloping her in a warm embrace as he held her hand tight and rushed out of her house pulling her along.
"Come back home before dinner!", (Y/N)'s mother yelled as the interlinked duo dashed out of the house.
"Let's go to our special secret hideout!", said Taehyung with glee as he darted through the fields and pastures. 'It always makes (Y/N) happy,' thought he as he smiled happily to himself. (Y/N) smiled a bit. Even if she was upset she did love spending time with her best friend.
The two crossed the raging stream with adroitness, as they had done several times prior. The next obstacle was the forest. The silhouette of the leaves cast myriad shadows on the foliage that grew below making the ground seem to be alive. Moreover, the night was close and the darkness had started to gather.
(Y/N), clutching onto Taehyung's hand, held her breath and slowly tip-toed through the dense forest. Taehyung softly hummed mellifluous tunes to put her at ease.
Finally, after an arduous journey that seemed never-ending, they came out of the forest into a large clearing. This was their so-called 'special hideout', just a simple clearing in the lush emerald green forest which had no covering of trees and from where the luminous sparkling twinkling stars that filled up the vast firmament could be seen.
The two sat down in the viridescent verdure staring up at the shimmering orbs. They stayed in silence, quietly enjoying just each other's presence.
"Hey. I'm really sorry.", started Taehyung with a quiet voice laced with traces of anguish.
"It's okay."
This was going to be the last time they spent together in their secret hideout, the place where they had spent countless nights just relishing each other's company. Here was the location where they had disclosed countless secrets to one another. Taehyung could still remember the day when (Y/N) told him that she wanted to be an author. It came to him as a shock but nonetheless, he vowed to support her till her death. She used to write stories day after day, Taehyung being her only reader.
She had never shown her works to anyone but him and he had fallen in love with her writing. As of now, she was in the middle of writing a story for Taehyung, writing a new chapter for him to read each week. But alas, their unfortunate separation was inevitable and Taehyung would never know how the story ended.
"You know, one day I'll see your name in a bookshop, you will be a best-selling author, I know it," said Taehyung with a soft tender smile, "That day I'll proudly say that you're my best friend. Don't you dare forget me after you become famous1"
"I won't." (Y/N) moved closed to Taehyung, resting her head on his shoulder, and whispered "Thanks for being my friend all these years. I'll really really miss you."
He glanced at her, tears were filling her eyes as she sniffled softly. Her bottom lip quivered as her eyes glistened due to the pellucid tears that ran down her cheek. Lovingly, he put his arms around her and gently embraced her as she put her arms around him too, filling their last moments together with tender hugs and affection.
After Taehyung had left Geochang-gun, (Y/N) slowly became more and more conservative, more and more introverted. She did not open up to people and her personality slowly and steadily started changing.
Ten years down the line, (Y/N) had completely transformed. She had moved to Seoul to pursue her dreams of becoming a well-known author. But destiny has its own ways to annihilate the dreams and aspirations of a person. She was stuck as a journalist, who had to be on the lookout for any scoop she could get. The little ember inside her heart that yearned for love had been snuffed out because she had become callous to survive in a dread-filled Machiavellian world and its execrable manoeuvres. Every last dreg of optimism and hope that had crystallized in her, had melted away. The only one that could revive her sanguine positive spirit was Kim Taehyung himself.
