"Ms. Jayson, what brings you to my class so early?" Mrs.Rose asked me as she unlocked her classroom. I followed behind her and we met at her desk.
I pulled out my test from my bag and set it down on her desk. "I think you marked this question incorrectly. I had the answer down as C and you marked it incorrect, but the other answers are wrong."
"I let me take a look." She pulled out a packet from a drawer in her desk. She flipped a few pages before she got to the right page. "Would you look at that. I was wrong. Let me fix your score really quickly." She laughed.
Mrs.Rose pulled out a red pen and crossed over my previous score, then replaced it with a 100. "Thank you." I smiled and slid my paper back into my bag.
"Anytime." She smiled and sat back in her chair. I turned around and walked back into the hallway. I made my way over to the stairs and went up a few flights. I walked over to my room and opened the door. I sat down in my seat and pulled out a book I had been reading.
The bell rang signaling it was time for home room. Slowly students started to pour in and the noise in the hallways transferred to the smaller rooms. My classmates started conversations and threw stuff around the room, but I still couldn't find the strength to look away from the book.
"Finch." Someone snickered behind me. I sighed and put a finger in the book.
"What would you like Drew?" I asked annoyed. I turned around to look at him.
"What are you reading?" Drew asked. I sighed and smiled.
"It's about a girl who's mustering everyone." I smiled.
"Oh." Is all he said. I turned back to my book and continued to read on. Homeroom went by quick, and soon enough the bell rang. I collected my books and pushed in my chair, then headed out the door to my first class, math.
I never enjoyed math class, especially because I'm a little slow in it. You see, I'm a high school senior, yet I'm just now taking Algebra II. Unlike me, someone a few years ahead of me took that class in 7th grade. His name was- Chris Kohler?
Chris Kohler. My high schools legend. He finished all of his high school classes by junior year, and started college while still enrolled. Now normally at a school like mine, the smart are teased and bullied, but not Chris. Chris was the exception. His good looks and athletic ability bought him the pass. He was the captain and pitcher of the baseball team, and also the student body president. He was a favorite. And my little freshman self had the biggest crush on him, but obviously he never even took a glance my way. But here he was now, at the front of my math class, staring at me. Looking me up and down.
"Oh no..." I whispered under my breath.
"Please, take a seat. The rest of the class should be here shortly." He smiled and motioned to the desks. I walked over to a desk in the second row, and I could see him eye me up in the corner of my eye. I placed my bag on the ground and took out my copybook and a pencil.
A sigh came from the front of the room. I looked up at Chris to see him making his way over to me. I straightened up in my seat. He sat down in the desk in front of me.
"Dove, out of the 14 other people in this class, 12 are on a trip and two are out sick today. So it might be just you and I for today." He straightened his mouth.
"What happened to Mr.Waters?" I asked him. He smiled and stood up. He began to walk slowly up to the front of the room.
"He quit on Friday, and I was called in by the principal to come teach his math class for the rest of the year. So here I am." He turned around and glanced at me. He stuck his hands in his pockets and looked out the window. "So tell me Dove, what's happened here since I graduated?" He peaked at me.
I cleared my throat. "Well, nothing really. A few new teachers came, teachers left, new students, graduations, nothing big."
"That's it?" He raised his eyebrows at me. "Because you know, I feel like there's going to be something big this year." He smiled and walked towards me.
"Aren't you gonna start the lesson?" I asked him as my cheeks flushed. He looked down at me and smiled in amusement.
"I was just getting there." He smirked and turned back around.
