Star's PoV

"So, i'm gonna ask again: what do you want to eat?" I asked.

"I told you I don't mind!"

"Okay. If you hate the what you're getting blame yourself." I went into the closet and fished out my apron, sticking it on myself.

"Yeah, I get it."

"Hey, could you help me with this?" I said holding up the laces at the back if my apron. "I never found out how to tie this behind my back." Marco got up and helped me tie the laces. "Thanks. So, do you like nachos?"

"Yeah!"

"Alright, nachos it is!" I took out my recipe book and started making the snack.

"To be honest, I thought you would be able to make it on your own."

"Well, it's my first time making nachos. Actually it's my second. I was making some with mother one day but then we stopped half way because she had some errand to do." Again, a silence occured between the two until I spoke up.

"You know, Janna told me you didn't really talk to anyone but her and two other guys. Why me?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean why are you talking to me?"

"Well, that's easy: you aren't like other people."

"What do you mean?"

"Other people, if I were to talk to them, would just say 'why do you never meet us after school' or 'you never hang out with us outside of school' and so far you haven't done that."

"Thanks Marco! But that didn't really answer my question. Why me?" I repeated. "You could have chosen to ignore me or something."

"Well, you confused me, to start of. You said you haven't went to a school in a while. I asked Janna 'cause  she looked like she knew you seeing as how you walked in class together. Turns out you two were talking so I decided to risk it and talked to her away from you. She told me that you could tell me what you ment and I didn't want to at first but then while you explained your life story you didn't seem weirded out about me. Oh, and one more thing. Do not tell anyone about what happens to me and my parents. I'll get really annoyed if I also had to deal with that and an extra beating."

"Marco, I never break my promises. Trust me."

"Okay."

"Well, the nachos are almost done. We only need to heat them up. You know, I should teach you to cook."

"Why?"

"You can make yourself food while your parents don't notice. I could give you a recipe book to help you."

"You don't have to do that."

"I don't have to do anything. I need to do it to help you."

"No you don't. And now that I think about it, what if my parents see the bandages? I should just take them off."

"No! Just say the nurse saw them and you told her you fell a few days ago."

"Look, Star, you seem really nice and I don't want you to get in trouble because of me."

"And? You think just 'cause i'm a girl I can't defend myself?"

"I didn't say that. I said you can't just get into trouble because of me."

"You know what? I got a sore head. Let's just stop arguing and eat some nachos." I placed the hot plate of nachos onto the table for us to eat. "Enjoy." I washed my hands and dug into the cheesy goodness. Then I noticed Marco wasn't eating anything. "Marco? You okay? Is it because of me?"

"No. It's just..." Marco took out a chip and munched on it, savoring the delicious flavour. "How about I come over on Saturday and you can teach me how to make these."

"What made you change your mind?"

"I knew you weren't going to stop annoying me about it." He picked up another chop and munched on it. "Also, you were being really nice to me and I just turned you down."

"Marco, you know I can help you."

"But that's the thing. I know you can help me to bur what if you I use yoir help to much? What if i'm too much for you? I haven't made a friend in a long time and I don't want to lose one either."

I sighed. "Listen to me: I know what it feels like to have no-one care for you and trust me it's a dark place. I'm trying to protect you from that place. If you ever get to much for me then I failed my mission."

"Thanks. You still don't have to do that, you know?"

"I know." We both sat smilling at each other, gazing into each others eyes. It was like that for a while until we were interrupted by a knock on the door. When we both realised they were staring they blushed and looked away. Knock knock. "Coming!" I called getting up and walking towards the door.

I opened the door and was shocked at who stood in front of me. "Dad?"

"Star!" My dad called.

"Dad, w-what are you doing here?"

"Well, i'm here to see my daughter, of course! How are you? Is your family here?"

"No, they're away getting groceries."

"Everything all right, Star?" Marco called walking into the hall to meet us.

"Shopping?" River repeated. "Looks like your brother is still here."

"This isn't my brother."

"Ah! Only been in the town for a few weeks and you already have a-"

"No!" I called out. "Marco is just a friend!"

"Star? What's going on here? Who is that?"

"Marco," I started. "This is my dad." Marco stood wide eyed and stared at my father.

"Um, nice to meet you Mr. Butterfly." Marco held out his hand for a handshake. My father accepted.

"Dad, why don't you join me and Marco with some nachos?"
