Avery

A week has past and I haven't heard from Luka at all.

It was now fall, the trees were loosing their colorful leaves and the kids would pile them up and jump into them. It was beautiful weather. My hand felt the bruise on my left arm. It hurt. It was new too. Dad came home and hit me with a bottle, hard. I think he could have broken it.

Mom told me to go to the store today and pick up some things for her. I walked to a Walmart just a few blocks away and scavenged around the store for an hour or so. I had a cart full of things, I honestly didn't know if I had enough money to buy it all. I waited behind a creepy looking guy in the checkout line who kept looking at me. I hit my face in my scarf as much as I could and tried to ignore it and it was freaking me out. Ah ha! I picked up one of the stack of newspapers beside me and read through it while the cashier scanned the guys things. It talked about politics on the first page and I turned the page to see what else was knew. I held my breath.

Newspaper: LUKA TOLEDO AND JANE DEAN THE HOTTEST COUPLE AROUND!

The picture below the letters had a shot of Luka and the Jane chick sitting in a fancy restaurant across from each other. They really did look good together.

My heart throbbed and I put the newspaper down. The man in front of me was walking away and the cashier smiled at me.

"Is that all, m'am?" The cashier asked.

I nodded my head.

I had a blank expression on and I pull out my wallet to pay. My hands were shaking as I handed the guy the hundred dollar bill. He glanced at my shaky hand but didn't say anything. I picked up the five bags which were heavy in both hands.

My breathing slowed as I stood outside. A cold breeze blew by and I looked at the blue sky. I gripped the bags tightly. Luka looked so happy, so carefree in the photo. Why couldn't I do what he was doing and move on? I headed down the busy street. My thoughts carried me away from reality as I followed the path down to my neighborhood.

I turned the corner that lead down my house. My hands were suffocating from all the bags and I put them down. Something didn't feel right. I looked back behind me, I felt someone was watching me. I picked up the bags and walked faster towards my yard. A car was following me!? I took off in a sprint. I heard the cars tires screech behind me. I was so close to home. Stuff flew out of my bags as ran for my life to get home. No use. The car pulled out in front of me and a man grabbed my arm and pulled me into the car. I was hit over the head.

My vision went black.
