Later That Day

"Honey? Wake up."

The gentle touch of his hand on my face accompanied the words.

I opened my eyes and saw him sitting on the edge of the bed, looking somewhat mischievious, ""Good morning, or whatever time it is."

"It's a little after twelve, in the afternoon, not midnigh," he explained, "I woke up a little while ago but wanted to let you catch up on sleep. Oliver texted me, said that Mac, Bres, him and Felicity were heading to lunch soon and asked if we felt like joining in. I guess they've been sightseeing most of the day. "

"Yes, I spoke with Mac this morning after you fell asleep. Food would be lovely."

"Cool, Dean and Coyote are going to meet us there. They've been chilling in their hotel room, she had work to do and he felt like being lazy."

"Very well then, I'll need to get to the hotel room where Mac and I are staying so I can change into something and freshen up a bit."

He held up my bags and smiled, "Took care of that already, I kind of let myself into your room, Mac told me your room number."

"Well aren't you the thoughtful lad."  Sweet as that was his smile told me there was something else involved, "Shall I head to the shower or is there more?"

He set my bags back on the floor and placed a larger size jewelry box in front of me, "Kind of," he paused, "No, it's not that, but..well, here." He opened it and I found myself at a loss for words.

It was a necklace, the pendant was a remarkably detailed glass white rose with silver tipped petals. It was perhaps three inches in length , the petals and the leaves were so well made they looked real. The chain was also silver and had been polished to a high luster. "It looks exactly like my roses, it's stunning Samuel."

His smile grew broader, and somewhat relieved. Why he would think I might not like it is quite beyond me. "I was going to give this to you back home, in the Bunker, but then things went crazy and threw off my plans. You see, yesterday was the exact day eight years ago that you showed me that book, the one with the photos of your roses, and, well, that day kind of changed my life and I wanted to do something special for you."

"Eight years? Has it been that long?"

He shrugged, "Or that short, depending on how you feel I guess."

I'd stopped keeping track of dates and years of special events, the memories often hurt too much and if I truly remembered every anniversary or special event, there wouldn't be a day in a year that didn't remind me of someone that I'd lost. Samuel, however, didn't have a lot of good events to remember, and I'd always thought that day had brought more bad memories than good for him.  Looking at it from his perspective now, well, a different set of emotions started churning.

"I hope those are happy tears."

"Yes darling, yes they are."

"Good, here, let me put it on." He lifted it out of the box and shifted so he could fasten the clasp.

I'd never expected a gift from him, the changes he'd made to the Bunker to make me more comfortable had been special in their own right, and I knew he disliked spending money as it still bothered him he didn't have a 'job' so to speak and others were supporting him. None of us minded, but he did. He'd found ways to repay Dean, Oliver and the others when they lent him money to purchase something other than food, so this was a total surprise.

He leaned back and smiled, "Perfect."

The closet doors in this room were mirrored,  I slid out of bed, walked closer to them and watched the light dance off the pendant. "It's more than perfect. Thank you."

"You're welcome," his eyes went out of focus briefly, "I let them all know we'll see them at lunch. We kind of have a traditional place we go when the whole pack's together, mainly because the portions are huge and the food is fantastic. It's a barbque joint, best one in the city."

"That sounds enticing," then I remembered Mac's request, "I spoke with Mac this morning, before I fell asleep. He is ready to truly say goodbye to Mary, and he would like it if all of you, even Thea and Felicity, would join.  You've all become something of his extended family over these last few years."

The smile he'd had faded, he nodded then took a moment to relay that through the pack bond, "We'd all be honored. When he figures out when and where, we'll all try to make it. Oliver's letting him know now."

"Good, I'll go get presentable then."  I took my bags and went into the master bathroom.  I chose to leave Samuel's gift on while I showered and got dressed.
