Among her comm, Lily and her family stick out like flowers on a field of grass with their white completion and ice white eyes, whereas everyone else had dark skin, dark eyes, and ebony hair. Their ancestors must have begged into this comm a Season ago, maybe more; Lily never knew about them, just that somehow they got earned the use name, Farmer.
Lily never cared to be a farmer, because she'd always get dirt on her hands whenever she helped out after creche. She also felt more connected to the Earth. Too connected; she felt shame whenever the connection happens because then her abilities will try to show after years of trying to hide them. To avoid that, she decided to avoid helping out, and instead began working on her drawing of Father Earth for her assignment on History. She was never good at drawing. Never will be. The A plus would be awarded to the best depiction of Father Earth in creche. It was not a contest, but an opportunity for Lily to get better. To get all straight As, and hopefully become an artist. So, She kept on drawing.
Father Earth's head was too big.
His eyes were too lopsided.
And when she worked on his lips.
Oh no.
Why are their lines on his lips? It looks like teeth.
She let out a silent growl and erased the whole rusty thing and start all over again for the tenth time, dropping her pencil in the process. Everything about that drawing looked ridiculous. Everyone was going to laugh at her.
"Lily-banilly!" Her mom called out, her sweet voice filling the air with its poison.
That stupid nickname. It was the same stupid nickname mom had been calling her since she was eight. She was thirteen now.
Her head jolted towards the side where mom stood, her familiar slim, tall figure kneeling down over a freshly hoed row, where new holes to plant seeds could be seen.
"What!" Lily called out. "I'm drawing. Leave me alone."
"I know you are... But you need to help... Lily get over here and help me plant seeds!"
Control.
Focus.
Breathe.
Stay calm. Lily told herself inside her mind.
The connection to the Earth grew once the anger flared up in her body; same with fear. Lily learned that as soon as she discovered her abilities. Instinct maybe.
Then the connection halted.
Then stopped.
Lily could no longer feel the Earth connecting to her.
A deep unsettling feeling rose in her gut. She knows she can't hide for long. Just like that kid who killed her crechemate during a geomestry test, her name: Damaya: who failed to hide their powers. A Guardian took her.
And now she is going to be tortured.
Stupid, stupid. Stay calm, Lily tells herself. You are not alone; their are other orogenes who are hiding their powers. Orogenes just like you...
Stay calm and help mom.
Lily sighed, got up and walked over to mom.
"Here take these seeds and get to work." Her mom said, giving Lily a handful of seeds to plant.
