ChapterOne

"Why didn't you say goodbye before you left?" Ellie's petulant voice trickled out of the cellphone speaker and into my ear. I rolled my eyes.

Ellie was always put out over something. Apparently today it was over my leaving without fawning over her.

"We had an entire goodbye party yesterday, remember? I told you then that my mom and I were leaving early this morning to be on our way. Apparently the academy is very strict about arrival times concerning new students."I sighed, glancing over at my mom who was driving and trying her very best to look as if she couldn't hear every word of our conversation.

Werewolf super-hearing was a bitch, ya'll. I could never get away with having a private conversation. Just another day in the life, am I right?

"Yeah, you did say something like that, but I assumed that lame goodbye was for all your other loser friends. I'm obviously more important than all of them combined, so you should have planned something more special for me."I would have laughed at the statement coming from any of my other friends, but there was something in Ellie's tone that had a shiver rolling down my back. The hard edge in her voice had me suddenly feeling uneasy.

Ellie Hanover had always been a self-absorbed, shallow, popular girl that I probably should have scraped off a long time ago, but I had a hard time giving up on any friendships I made, no matter how toxic they were becoming.

"I'm sorry Ellie, but there just wasn't any time for extra goodbyes today." I heaved out a deep breath, working up the nerve to cut the call before things escalated, which, knowing Ellie, would be any second now. "Look,Ells, we're getting close to the academy now and phone reception hereis supposed to be extremely spotty, so I need to let you go now. I'll get in touch when I can and we'll make plans to hang out when I come home for break, okay?"

This was not going to go over well, I just knew it.

"Kalia Shaw, if you hang up on me, you are going to regret it. Goddess, I cannot believe what selfish bitch you are being right now! And let me tell you one thing—." Ellie's voice cut out suddenly and I couldn't stop the cringe from painting itself on my face.

I pulled the phone away from my ear and glanced down at the screen.

Call ended.
And I noticed I had no bars, so we must have entered one of the many dead-zones rumored to be around the school.

I definitely was not looking forward to dealing with Ellie later. That girl could hold a grudge like no one else.

A throat clearing drew my attention to the other side of the car and my eyes met orbs that were so like my own dark blue ones. My mom was definitely no slouch in the looks department, and she had thankfully passed down a few of her features to me.

"I don't know why you're still friends with that girl, honey. She's bad news, and your father agrees with me. I get a bad feeling every time she's around." That last statement spoke loads; my mom was famous for her 'feelings'. Most of the time she was dead-on with her character assessments and if she said something bad was about to happen, she was almost never wrong.

I just didn't want her to be right this time. Ellie and I had been friends since we were in the second grade, and just the thought of giving up on that friendship turned my stomach.

But the time when I would be forced to cut her loose was coming, I knew. One day, she would take things too far in her anger and someone would get hurt. An Alpha's daughter couldn't be seen associating with a she-wolf who so blatantly disregarded the rules. She had no issues picking fights with other wolves and doing what suited her, pack hierarchy be damned. She skirted the line very finely, and one day she was going to topple right over it and there would be no saving her.
