Amy sat on the bleachers in the school gym, detached from everyone else. She couldn't find anyone who wanted to dance with her, but she didn't like square dancing anyway. It involved too much physical contact, something she was not a fan of. She scanned the crowd for her friends to talk to, but everyone she saw was dancing with someone. As she was studying the hoards of people, her eyes kept stopping at a specific student that went by the name of Preston. Her heart leapt with joy. As the clouds of dancers spun around the gym, Amy's smile immediately disappeared. The dancers seemed to be parting like the Red Sea. In the smack center of the dance floor was Preston. Her longtime crush. Preston was dancing with another girl. A different girl. A girl who wasn't her.

"Why do I care so much?" she thought. It wasn't like she had feelings for him, but why was she feeling so jealous?

"Hi Amy!" came a cheerful voice. It was her close friend, Rebecca."Why aren't you dancing?"

"Oh.. It's because.. I need to use the restroom. I'll be right back" Amy stammered. Why was she so bothered with the fact that Preston was dancing with someone else? Yet, her heart still felt like it was torn out and stomped on all over. She ran out of the gym, trying to hold back her waterworks.

As she was walking to the restroom, she could feel her face burning up. She locked herself in a stall and tears started to flow down her cheeks.

"What the heck am I doing? Why am I crying over someone as stupid as Preston?"

She shook her head, trying to tell her heart to stop lingering over the topic of Preston.

Meanwhile, Preston was sure Amy was going to get down from the bleachers to dance with him. He was only borrowing that girl to make her jealous. He wanted to see her adorable dimples when she smiled. He saw her get down from the bleachers and his smile became bigger.

"She's coming!" He straightened his shirt collar and tried to brush the bird nest of a head he had. He popped a mint into his mouth to get rid of any bad breath and waited for his crush to arrive. He quickly ran up to his friend, Dennis in an excited tone.

"Den Den what do I do?"

"What do you mean?"

"I think they're serving chicken nuggets in the concession stand over there!"

"Wait what? Let me go look for some."

There was a nudge at Preston's lower shoulder. He looked down and saw a tiny girl by the name of Rebecca glaring at him.

"There aren't chicken nuggets here, but there are Amys."

"What's an Amy? What does it taste like?"

Preston has never felt a punch that hard before. He realized that his technique to get his longtime crush, Amy's attention worked. A little too well. He turned to look in her direction but saw her retreating back storming out of the gym. His heart sank and it finally dawned on him that maybe he went a little too far.

His heart was so heavy with guilt as he trudged to the bleachers to sit down.

"WHERE ARE THE CHICKEN NUGGETS PRESTON? I WAS LOOKING ALL OVER-" Dennis had stormed back in anger when he found out there were no chicken nuggets. He paused and looked at Preston's solemn face.

"What's wrong?"

"I messed up big time," came a quiet reply.

The two best friends sat in silence as Dennis pieced together what had happened.

After a long while, Dennis began to speak again.

"Preston, when you drop a chicken nugget on the floor, your natural instinct would be to pick it up again, am I right?"

Preston nodded quietly. His eyes were watering but he wanted to look brave in front of Dennis so he tried to hide it.

"So go pick up that fallen chicken nugget."

In the meantime, Amy finally gathered enough courage to step out of the restroom. She wiped her red, puffy eyes and took a few breaths.

"Preston is just a stupid jerk. I don't need him. Why do I even care about him? I'm just going to-" she suddenly paused.

Standing in front of her was the one and only, Preston.

"....hey."

Amy's gut reaction was to sock him in the stomach. To punch him in the face for making her cry like that. Why did he have to wear such a tight dress shirt? She could see the bold outlines of his swim team abs.

But yet, why did she just want to run up to him and envelope him in a bear hug? What were these feelings? Her heart beat accelerated.

"Hey."

"Look Amy, I just want to apologize-" Preston started.

He was cut off by a sudden pair of warm lips on his lips. Amy was against his chest, kissing him, hard. He kissed her right back and put his arms around her, at the same time she hugged him back. They pressed their lips together, and Amy felt Preston's body loosen, arms clutching her shoulders. The two stood that way for a while. It could have been seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, who knew? Preston and Amy just stood together, savoring the warmth and presence of each other. The warmth of the flame of love flickered in their hearts. They broke apart for a second, and they came back together again. After all, two halves equal one whole.

After what felt like barely a few seconds, and not nearly enough time, the two broke apart, and laughing softly, walked together, hand in hand, back to the gym, where everyone else was dancing.

Back inside the gym, Preston could see Amy more clearly and noticed that her cheeks were a beautiful shade of red. Preston saw the emotions on Amy's face and tucked the information away for later. Preston steeled himself.

Preston said quietly, "Look Amy, the entire dance I wanted to ask you to dance with me, but I was too scared to ask.. I was scared that you would reject me."

"Oh." was all Amy replied.

Just then, the principal announced, "Okay guys! It is time for our slow dance!"

Amy didn't move. Preston decided it was now or never, and asked her.

"Umm.. Amy? Do you want to dance with me?"

Amy lifted her head from on top of her knees and looked at Preston. She gave a single nod. Preston stood up, and took Amy's hand. Amy allowed herself to be followed onto the dance floor. Preston took Amy's hand in his started a slow, simple dance. Amy did not object.

The two continued their slow dance, and they wound peacefully through the calm crowd. Amy at last truly forgave Preston, and they enjoyed the song, spinning slow circles and moving in perfect harmony. The world suddenly seemed to disappear from the eyes of Preston and Amy, as they twirled away under the night sky, under the stars on a romantic Friday evening.
