"I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery- Mountains, trees, people.I thought 'this is what it is to be happy'" -Sylvia Plath
Sofia's POV
I couldn't help but roll my eyes at Jackson who is currently making up excuses.
"If you weren't interested in seeing the movie why did you bring me here on the first place?" I inquired.
"Actually....I just wanted to hangout with you. The movie was just an excuse to see you." He said flashing his million dollar smile but I wasn't having any of it. That pissed me off even more. I had planned everything. My evening was ruined because of his carelessness.
He stepped towards me and caressed my cheeks. He didn't apologize nor he seemed apologetic. I moved my face aside to stop him. I was mad at him. He sighed and looked away. I suddenly felt an urge to pat his shoulder.
"Its okay...We can watch the movie later..." A brilliant idea to save our evening came up to my mind.
"Jackson! We can go to the forest behind our school for a walk!" I said enthusiastically.
"Forest? Girl, are you nuts!? I didn't spend an hour on my hair just to go to a f*cking forest!" He yelled at my face.
"Fine. I'm going alone."My heart broke when he yelled at me. I wanted to run away from the scene but I didn't. I can spend my evening alone.
I started to walk away from him when suddenly he held my hand. I turned around to met Jackson's apologetic eyes. He came near me. My heart skipped a beat when he took my hands close to his mouth. He gently planted a kiss on my knuckles. His lips felt so warm on my skin. He looked into my eyes.
"I'm sorry for being so careless and rude to you. I will accompany you to the forest. After all I can't leave my date in the forest."
For a moment I was numb. Then I finally looked away. I'm sure I was red as a tomato.
Within ten minutes we were surrounded by the dark woods. Often forests are portrayed as something eerie in those horror movies but I never find them scary. Even in this hour they looked comforting. Since the day I shifted here I felt a special pull towards this mysterious woods. Although there isn't any particular story or legend about this forest but I would love to hear one. We sat under a tree. I sat opposite to him. The moon shone brightly over his chiseled jawlines. He was so gorgeous.
I was talking about the nature and the wild to Jackson who was nodding at me. I wasn't great at striking conversation nor I was a great storyteller like Jackson but I enjoyed talking about my passion and goals. Shortly after I felt that Jackson was not listening to me. He was looking everywhere but me. Nothing in the woods was interesting to him. I heard him sigh in frustration. I didn't know what to say anymore because boredom already took over him. Suddenly I noticed a figure behind Jackson from the bushes. I couldn't see clearly what it was until the moon dominated over the clouds. It was a silhouette of a boy.
"Somebody's there!" I nearly screamed finally dragging Jackson's attention.
I quickly stood up and went toward the shadow. Unfortunately I was too late. I saw the shadow running away as soon as I stood up. I still went towards the bushes to find nobody.
"What are you talking about? There was nobody." Jackson said getting on his feet.
"I swear I saw somebody." I protested back. He sighed in frustration and brushed his hair with his hand.
"I think you are just hallucinating." He continued,"And I got a call from my pals. They need me. So gotta go." He said as he starts to walk away slowly probably waiting for me to join him.
A part of me wanted to beg him to stay with me a little longer but at the same time I wanted to enjoy these cold breeze alone.
"Okay.Take care." I waved him. He looked back at me. For a moment he looked shocked perhaps he thought I would leave with him. He quickly masked his expression and walked away.
I was finally alone in the dark restive woods. I sat under the same tree again. I was staring at the moon when a faint light caught my attention. I turned to my left to see a bunch of fireflies surround me. They spread in different direction and looked mesmerizing in the night. They felt like small pieces of gold decoration the forest with their light. They had came to accompany me in the solidarity.
I heard my stomach grumble. I am ashamed to say that I skipped lunch because I was too busy picking up my outfit. My stomach grumbled again, this time even louder accompanying hunger pangs. I held my stomach to make it stop grumble else it would scare the fireflies away!
I almost jumped when something fell on my shoulder. I fearfully turned my head to see a berry. It was ripened and smelled extremely sweet. Then a few more fell from the above. I looked up but I couldn't see anything. The fireflies had already left after being scared of my grumbles so it was too dark for me to see anything.
I took a berry. I started inspecting it. I didn't think much and at it. The berry crushed under my teeth releasing its sweet syrup. I ate all the berries which were on my lap. After eating like ten berries I felt satisfied. I thanked God for showering me with berries. My back was resting against the tree trunk. I felt comfortable. My eyes felt heavy and before I know I fell asleep.
My sweet slumber was interrupted by a vibration in my pocket. I yawned lazily and stretched my arms. I took out my phone to see my mom's number playing on my screen.
"Where the hell are you?! Are you at his place? What are you guys doing? Did he tried to take advantage of you?" As soon as I picked up my phone mom bombed me with her questions.
"No. I feel asleep in the forest." I said still sleepily. "What?! What are doing in the forest? Come home right now. Else you will be grounded for a year!" She yelled and hang up.
I sighed and stood up. I was still a bit sleepy but as soon as I got up a bark slid down from my shoulders which was covering me the entire time I was asleep!
FUN FACT: The forest Sofia visited today is the same forest where Angela and Evan saw the fireflies. If you don't know them read our first story MFLS. We're sure you won't be disappointed!
