Rhiannon's POV
As I walk into the class, almost being late as per usual, I see that everyone is on their phones, texting each other instead of talking, although they are within two meters of distance from each other.
To tell the truth, I have never understood the urge of people my age to constantly type into their mobile phones, instead of talking to each other. Well, except for the fact that I don't really engage myself in the talking part all that often either. I only have my phone to communicate with Ms. Camille about practices and when I know I will be late.
By the strange smile my sister has on her face, I can tell she's texting with Lucas.
My father walks in and starts lecturing about how our generation uses technologies too much and blah, blah, blah. Then Riley and Maya start to act in a way that makes me question if their sanity. So far nothing new.
Lucas raises his hand to comment on what my father says, "Sir, if I may take a different position?"
"Yeah, save me, Mr Friar, do I go too far?" Really? Is that a question we need to ask? I think the answer is too obvious. Lucas apparently agrees.
"I understand your point, but I use my phone to video chat my old friends and to find out what's going on in Texas," Lucas explains. Should I understand it the way that everyone is using their phone all the time to chat with his friends in Texas? Nice idea, but nobody is as naive as to think that each time someone is glued to their phone, they're texting someone who is in a different part of the country.
"Don't act like you aren't texting my sister like 90% of the time, although she is often within a few meters from you," I murmur, though nobody hears that, to which I am kind of glad.
Farkle starts giving one of his long speeches and pulls out a strand of hair from Maya and Riley each and I've never been happier to not be a part of their group.
"The assignment, you can't escape it, I am teacher!" my father tries to mimic Farkle. "Okay, so here's what we're going to do, guys. We're going to split into teams," which basically means no team work for me, nobody will care about how I do it anyway. "and discover whether or not new technology has made us better people. You'll do presentations on your findings." Understand, unless your name is Riley Matthews, Maya Hart, Farkle Minkus or Lucas Friar, you're not going to present your homework at all and mostly people will act as if you aren't a part of this class. "And here's a twist, no computers. We're going old school. You're going to do your research at the New York Public Library." I've already been there, it is a nice deserted place, ideal for me. I sometimes go there when Ms. Camille insists for me to take a day off from gymnastics.
"And here's another twist, because I trust you not at all. Give me your cell phones." Yeah, because I spend so much time on my phone that you have to rip it out of my hand. As if I had time for any of this technology nonsense.
Everyone starts handing them up, but when I'm supposed to, I just say, "Why should I?" Although I do not care about mobile phones, why should I hand my phone to my father, when he never as much as thought of buying me one? I got it from Ms. Camille so that I could contact her. But father just rolls his eyes and I have to hand it in anyway.
Everyone (aka Riley, Maya, Farkle and Lucas) is teamed up and big surprise! Riley teams up with Lucas. Seriously, how could anyone ever expect that?
This is going to be a long day.
Lucas' POV
I look at the rest of the class, looking for a kind of familiar figure I briefly spotted the last time. Finally, my eyes land on Charlotte Robinson in the back of the classroom. She doesn't seem to be looking for anyone to team up with, which I find strange, given the assignment.
I turn to Riley and ask, "What do you know about her?" while looking Charlotte's way and pointing at her.
"Oh, you mean Rhiannon?" What Riley says leaves me shocked.
"You mean her name is not Charlotte Robinson?" I'm sure confusion shows in my tone by now.
"Oh, she told her her name is Charlotte Robinson? Why am I not surprised?" Riley rolls her eyes slightly.
"That doesn't matter, but she doesn't look like she has anyone to team up with. Couldn't she join us?" I look at Riley for permission to invite Charlotte, or rather Rhiannon, to our team.
"Trust me, it is better if we do not. She doesn't usually deal with other people in a friendly way," Riley explains, but it's hard for me to believe that. I mean, she did introduce herself to me using a non-existent name, but I didn't get an unfriendly vibe from our brief encounter.
"Yeah, some call her queen of stone," Maya pipes up.
"By the way, soaring eagle, you walkin' with us to the library tonight?" Maya kind of invites me.
"Sure, if that's good with you, guys."
"Well, seeing as you're Riley's partner on this assignment," Maya smirks, " I guess we should find out if it's okay with her. Riley?"
She doesn't say anything, just gives me thumbs up and smiles at me, which I guess means yes and then she leaves with Maya.
"But I still think we should have teamed up with Rhiannon," I mumble to myself once they're gone.

Rhiannon's POV
I rush out of my breath to the library, hoping that it is not closed yet. The last gymnastics lesson I was teaching today dragged on a bit. I really need to do well at this assignment, given the fact that I got an F from the essay about what is worth fighting for for not handing it in, although I actually did. I hope that father at least reads through what I write on this one, since no presentation will happen.
When I manage to push the library door open, luckily seeing it is not locked, I let out a sigh of relief. I greet the librarian, "Hello, Mrs. Brown."
"Hi, Rhiannon," she greets me back. "What are you doing here so late? I thought you only come here on your days off."
"Well, we were given this history assignment about whether or not new technologies have made us better people," I explain to her.
"Oh, some kids were already here about that, but they acted really strange, as if they never saw a library, or books for that matter, in their life."
I don't say anything, fully realizing that it was Riley and her friends.
Mrs. Brown then points to a section of the library where I may find something useful for that matter.
I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do this project, because it is obviously about communication and connecting with each other, but I have no one to work with, and I wouldn't connect with anyone if I had the chance.
I choose one book from the shelf and start reading it, not looking up until I hear the door to the library open again. Strange. I didn't think anyone except me would come here so late, just before the closing time.
When I turn around and leave my place hidden between two large bookshelves to see who it is, I am shocked to see Lucas. He is looking for something. He picks up a thin notebook and turns back to the door to leave again, but when he sees me, he stops short.
"Charlotte!" he exclaims in shock, but then his tone drops, "Or, should I say Rhiannon?"
"I see that you already talked about me with my sister. What has she told you about me?" I ask, genuinely curious, though somehow already knowing the answer.
"Wait? Your what? You have a sister? And I know her? Who is that?" he showers me with a bunch of questions.
"Apparently, not a lot," I say with a sigh. "I mean Riley, she is my twin sister, in case you didn't already know, which you obviously didn't."
"Why didn't she tell me? As for your question, she just told me that your name is Rhiannon and that you are not very friendly. Is that true?"
I answer him very briefly, "Yeah, it is," giving him a small nod.
