Enjoy :)

His breath panned out in puffs as his feet carried him briskly along the uneven pavement, he knew this route like the back of his hand, he knew it better than he knew himself. Pristine houses lined either side of the tarmac road, gravel driveways were adorned with flashy cars that sparkled in the evening sun. It was so quiet. Beautifully quiet. Not a soul moved as he continued to stride towards his forsaken destination, the light twinkle of birdsong graced his ears and he sighed. Everything was so serene. Not for long. The expensive oak panelled house situated to his left pulled him to a stop as he gravitated towards the driveway, the all too familiar sight dragging his sub-conscience into a temporary comatose. Eyelids fluttered as his orbs were concealed and reality was wrenched away from him.

Vivid images of his younger self consumed his brain, captivated his soul; playing with his toys on the freshly mown front lawn, repeatedly launching balls into the air in the hopes that at least one would fall through the hoop and the sound of screeching tires before life as he knew it was ripped away from him. The sirens and melancholy lights of the emergency services haunted his dreams, fueled his insomnia, it had been ten years since the incident. Ten years since he watched a disturbed police officer pull a foil blanket over his mother's limp body while another sealed the cuffs around an intoxicated man's wrists.

His eyes snapped open as a lone tear escaped and snaked down the smooth surface of his young face, paving a path before it reached his chin and fell into oblivion. He eyed the house - his home - one last time before continuing on his journey, unconsciously walking the intimate route.

A hiss escaped his lips as cool metal dug into the tender skin of his angle, the barrel of a gun, he paused for a mere second to readjust is before continuing his journey. A callused hand located at the end of a scarred wrist reached up to roughly rub his tearstained face, he had to be strong; no tears, no weakness, no vulnerability. He had to get revenge.

Many tense minutes had passed before the wealthy neighbourhood merged into a poverty-stricken area, it wasn't quiet here. It was full of pain; faint cries were emitted from open windows, arguments rose to a heated level and every now and then a scantily clad youngster emerged from a house, prepared to sell their happiness for money.

He arrived in front of a decrepit house and his lungs drew a deep breath before he approached the door and pushed it open without hesitation. He was greeted with a family room, three young children watched him with terrified eyes, an exhausted woman was lounging on a beaten couch and a man was working in the corner of the room. They didn't deserve this peace.

His fingers itched as he reached down to wrap his fingers around the deadly handle of the machine tucked safely into his boot and as he withdrew it the man that had been watching him cautiously, previously frozen, rose with both hands extended.

"Alright son, I don't know what you want but we can work it out", he was approaching slowly as he spoke, his voice scratchy from years of smoking death sticks.

The gun was frantically waved around as he warned the man to stay back.

"You killed her! You took her from me", the flood gates opened again as he felt his previous control slipping, "you need to die. You killed her. You need to die. It what's fair. A life for a life". The insanity bubbled to the surface and his voice cracked while he continued to murmur inaudible phrases.

"Son it was an accident, I can't express how sorry I am but please, think about what you're doing, I have a family".

"I had a family! I had a family and you took it from me! You selfish bastard!" He was screaming now but his feet remained unmoving and his finger had yet to cover the trigger. It was only when soft cries from the children cowering by their mother reached his ears, that he froze. He was no better than the man. The man that killed his mother.

Knees gave way and he collapsed to the ground as overwhelming sobs racked his body, the gun was still outstretched but the aim was off. The man saw the open window and hastily approached before his palm gently encased the barrel of the deadly weapon before pulling it from the boy's grip and discarding it on the floor behind him.

Strong arms wrapped around the broken boy's shoulders and he pulled him into his firm chest. The boy pounded on his chest but he held still and took the beatings.

"I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!", he repeated the phrase continuously to accompany his punches, he repeated the phrase until his voice grew hoarse.

Tears collected in the man's eyes but he refused to let them escape, "I'm sorry".

"I hate you", a mere whisper as the boy crumbled into his arms, mental exhaustion consuming his body.

"I'm so sorry".
