The one other thing they did get used to was that Samuel did not attend any of the town's functions like Fall dance or May flower dance. They never saw him at one of those and no one has ever questioned it why he wasn't there.
Samuel never saw the point of attending. He couldn't dance, and he tried to avoid the pitiful glances.
Rose swirled around in her dress, checking herself over. Her dress wasn't a new one, but it was altered from her mom's old dress. She added some pink ribbon and lace and she got a fresh look to it. It would of been nice to be able to buy a new dress she saw in the newly open millinery shop in town. When she mentioned it to her mother she got the answer she expected anyway.
"Rose your brothers and sisters all need new boots for winter." And that was that.
..
Rose wished she didn't have to arrive at the dance with her parents and siblings, but there was no way around it. It would be so much more fun if only she was allowed to go with Beth, but when she asked her father, he just gave her the look, and her mother gave her the answer.
"Rose! Where did you get that idea from. What would people say?"
Well, she couldn't get out of it , she'll have to do the next best thing when she gets there. The plan was, as soon as possible separate from her family and look for Beth.
"Come on children! Get going we'll be late." Her father's beaming voice pointed the starting of his impatience.
"Why does it matter if we are late to the harvest dance?" The younger one asked.
"Well, all the best food will be eaten and you'll be stuck with potato peels. "
"Yuck, nobody likes those!"
Rose's mother Elvina smiled at their expressions.
"We better get moving then." She usher them.
As soon they got inside the hall, Rose looked for Beth. When she spotted her, she rushed towards her. Her dad was busy talking to his friend Jack and her mother was busy gossiping with his wife. Nobody noticed her walk away from them, and even if they did once they were inside no one cared. Her siblings also scattered around finding their own friends.
Beth gave her a smile and took her hand in hers.
"I'm happy to see you Rose. It was boring without you. Guess who is here?"
She gave Rose a mischievous look.
"Who?"
Beth leaned and whispered in her ear.
"Adam!"
Immediately Rose's cheeks turned pink and she placed a hand over her lips. His name slipped out and she hoped no one heard her.
"Adam is here!" Then she leaned forward.
"He is here? His family usually doesn't attend this kind of functions unless it's related to farming." She whispered in Beth's ear.
"His family is not here. He came with his friend Ben."
The first tunes of fiddlers filled the air calling for the dance couples to fill the floor.
Adam Hedrich the son of the richest family in this part of the county was looking her way. Rose couldn't believe her luck. She was sure she wasn't imagining it. Rose knew she was pretty if not beautiful, but Adam was popular with ladies and girls of this town. Handsome and rich the combination they found irresistible. He could have his pick.
Beth almost had to collect her jaw off the ground. Rose always thought she was invisible to him.
"Rose I think Adam is coming this way. I bet he is going to ask you for a dance." Beth informed her like she couldn't see it for herself.
"No way! I'm not looking."
"You don't have to look he is heading our way."
"What am I going to do?"
"For pity's sake, you'll dance. Stop it! "
Before she had time for another thought she heard his velvety voice.
"May I have this dance miss Rose?"
Her cheeks were in flames. He knew her name.
"Yes, you may." Rose looked up at him sure she'll swoon, but she has given him the only acceptable answer. He swirled her around the dance floor with an ease, Rose never felt happier in all of her life. She was dancing with Adam, her first and only love. It felt like she was in the clouds and could fly. Even after the third dance he didn't let go of her. Rose saw the look that Tina gave her. It was known she considered Adam hers. Too bad. It wasn't Rose's fault Adam chose not to dance with her.
