The house was very quiet. If you listened hard enough you could have heard a mouse scurring across the floor. But in front of me laid my mother. She had blood on her from head to toe and she did not look good. I knelt next to her, trying to see if there was any sign of life. Looking at her closer I realized that she was gone. She had cuts and brusies all over her body. Cameron just stood there and stared. I walked over to him and pulled him into a bear hug. He rested his head on my shoulder and we both started to cry. Cameron picked up his head and looked into my eyes, "Look, I know you probably don't want to even know what happened, but we need to call the police."
Cameron went into the kitchen and called the police. Within in a matter of minutes there was the whole fire station there, along with cops. They knocked on the door and I ran over and opened it. The firefighter standing in front of me asked me to tell him what had happened. So I explained that Cameron and I had just come home from school and opened the door and saw her laying on the floor. He asked us if our parents were divorced or had any previous history of getting into fights. So we told him that dad sometimes came home from the bar drunk and got a little violent but nothing close to what had happened tonight.
The cops sent us to a Aunt Tegan's house for the night and our house was blocked off and considered a crime scene. Not being home, or seeing mom or dad for a week felt weird. The cops had arrested dad and questioned him day and night. Cameron and I had not seen him since the incident but were scared to talk to him, just incase it was indeed him.
About a week and a half after the accident some cops came to Aunt Tegan's house. She went and answered the door and started talking to them and didnt return for ten minutes. When she entered the kitchen she looked shocked.
"What did they have to say?" asked Cameron.
"Well, they are almost positive its your dad.... your mom's body was in pretty bad shape. If it was really Mike then he could get up to a life time sentence in jail. I am truly sorry you guys have to hear this." she finished.
"How could.... i just cant believe dad would have done something like that to mom!" said Cameron.
"I know. Maybe you guys should go to sleep and we can talk tomorrow"
That night i couldnt go to sleep. I got up and went over to the window in the room and stared out into the distance. If it really was dad, what made him do that? How could it be him? The more i thought about it the more it didnt make sense. I walked down the hall to Cameron's room and opened the door slowly. I looked at the desk in his room to see him looking at pictures from an old family album.
"Cameron, this whole story doesnt add up! Dont you think something is wrong?" i asked.
"I've been thinking the same thing but i can't figure out what else could've happened." he said.
"i guess we might be able to find out more tomorrow. Could i sleep in here tonight?"
"Sure. I always knew you liked me after all!" he said with a wink.
"Very funny, but no." i said, climbing onto his bed.
