"After you die, your spirit becomes a ghost. Separated from the physical, you linger here for all eternity. Unable to feel, taste, smell...you simply observe the living, feeling your hunger for revenge grow by the second."
"So we'll be trapped forever?!"
Awoken by the rather loud conversation in the shared bedroom, I finally open my eyes. All beds besides my own are empty. The curtains are half-opened and trough them shine the first rays of sunshine of the day. In the middle of the room are the rest of my roommates sitting in a circle, telling each other ghost stories.
"No no no, you got it all wrong! Don't be so pessimistic." Laura hits Anne's head jokingly while still keeping a stern face.
"Okay then, tell us what you think Laura." I try to mingle myself in the conversation as I sit down in the circle they had formed before I woke up.
"When you die, your spirit becomes a ghost who relives your happiest day over and over." Kyla, the petite girl who's woken me in the first place is a bit more satisfied with Laura's theory rather than Anne's. However, her relieved smile disappears soon after I speak again.
"What's the point, when you don't have any good days, to begin with?"
The room fell silent. No one knew how to answer to that. Instead, it got everyone to think about their own lives. Most of them have been in this asylum for as long as they can remember. Not because there is something wrong with them mentally, but because there's something wrong with them, period. No one can figure out what it is. The only thing they figured out over the years is that it's contagious. So now, every newborn baby needs to undergo a test to this strange disease, which they eventually called Subimorsis. If they turn out positive, they get sent to one of the many isolated asylums.
"Well," Laura starts apprehensively. "there's always a best."
Looking around, I noticed not many seemed convinced and yet again there was silence.
"Yeah," calmly, I stand back up "that's what I thought." Some are still staring at nothing, though by the time I reach the wardrobe, all eyes are on me.
"Alice, where are you going?"
I leave them waiting for an answer as I silently put on some clothing. A nice green skirt over a mostly white t-shirt and well-worn boots underneath is the outfit I eventually settle with. My braid comes undone and wavy brown hair falls over my shoulders. I stroke them to even the hair out a bit. Finished with a coat and scarf, I walk to the door. Their heads follow me, though I pay them no mind.
"Somewhere worth reliving."
Gasps and unapproved exclaims echo through the room. I ignore them though doing so, I didn't notice the petite girl suddenly hugging me from behind.
"Good luck"
The unapproved reactions were of course because I'm going to try to leave this cursed place. However, I've been planning this escape for years now and while observing the guards, I've managed to find a weak link. One of the guards has mysophobia, fear of bacteria. Doesn't make her the most fitting person to guard a place full of sick people, but whatever, it works for me. Casually, I walk towards the tall woman standing guard.
"Hey, Monika!" I greet her with a smile attempting to hide the mischief behind it.
"Ah, hello Alice." she smiles back. "Can I help you?"
She replied. I can continue my scheme.
"The other girls haven't been so nice to me."
"And you want me to go there and help?" she asks with a wary look in her eyes. Fooling her is no easy task, but I've got something else in mind.
