The way I understand this quote, is that you will only remember, that your friends weren't backing you up, when you were on the battlefield. You will remember, that your friends just stood by and watched you get shot down.  
When I think about it, that's not how a real friend should be. A real friend should bring out the best in you. They are the ones who gotta catch you, when you're about to fall. They are the ones, that will cheer you up, when you lose a battle. The ones who defend your name behind your back. And the ones whom you will get good and bad ideas with.
A good friend is the one who stands by your side through all your failures, and with you in your success. We won't remember what our enemies said, but we will always remember, that our friends didn't say anything. We will remember, that we felt alone, even though they were right beside us. You will remember that they were your friend, but not the one who would fight for you in the end.
I would say that as a best friend, you have some responsibilities like defending your best friend, when they're in a fight and helping them when in need. I feel like it's one of the worst things a friend could do, and that is to stand silent while watching your friend get torn apart.
In my perspective, it's very important to be a friend who is loyal. Like I said before, friends are supposed to bring out the best in you and help you become a good person. If I was in a fight, and my friends didn't back me up, even though I was wrong, I would feel really betrayed.
In my opinion, a best friend is a person who will defend you even though you're wrong.
It's very sad, that betrayal never really comes from the enemy, yet it usually comes from those who you, trust the most. Fake friends believe in rumors, however, real friends, believe in you.
The silence of the friends could be because they maybe believed all the accusations the enemy made. From a personal perspective, that's a fake friend.
I personally really like this quote, because it's very inspiring. It really makes me consider, who my real friends are. It makes me think if I'm a good friend. And it makes me wonder if I support my friends enough
