the shadows grew darker, and she didn't know where to go. the sun had fallen an hour ago, that's how long she'd been out. she had been planning her escape to her mother for about a year, away from her abusive father. she had a backpack full of belongings and an arm covered in cigarette burns.

suddenly, she remembered. the greyhound. quickly, she pulled out her phone and booked a spot on the greyhound from brookville, pennsylvania, to philadelphia. she would pay in person, about $40 dollars. even though that was 40% of her money, she had to do it. she couldn't walk 20 hours just to see her mother.

y/n arrived at the brookville greyhound house and boarded her bus. she slowly handed the driver the $40 and took a seat at around the middle of the bus.

"is anyone sittin' here, sweetie?" a plump woman smiled sweetly. she wore a cardigan sweater and could be no younger than 50. a few grey hairs poked out from her dark brown curls and she spoke in a southern accent with courtesy. hesitantly. y/n shook her head and moved over. "so, what're you doing on this bus here all alone? it's 2 in the mornin', sugar!"

"i'm going to move in with my mother. she's been waiting for me." y/n sighed quietly. "it's been 12 years."

"and how old are you now?"

"i'm, um, 14."

the woman put a solemn arm on her shoulder. "i'm glad you're seeing your mother. so, honey, what's your name? i'm lunette brown."

"y/n l/n."

lunette's eyes popped out of her skull. "you're a l/n? a-as in m/n l/n?"

"you know my mother?"

"who doesn't!" lunette yelped. "she's practically the richest woman in pittsburgh!"

y/n's eyebrows furrowed. "she didn't write that in the birthday letters! what does she do?"

"well, she's an interior designer, who doesn't charge much. however, with her low prices, she makes millions! she lives in a penthouse and most of philly loves her! she's got her own tv show where she makes over houses all over the united states, 'l/n's gonna fix it!'. she's an icon."

"i wouldn't have known. i wasn't allowed to watch tv back home."

for the rest of the trip, lunette and y/n bonded over their love for travelling and art.

soon, lunette and y/n had to depart. the greyhound arrived in philadelphia. y/n gripped onto her backpack as she stepped off of the bus. it was 3 in the morning and she didn't know where to go, so she rang her mother.

y/n began scouring the web to find her mother's number, and soon, she found it. quickly, she dialled the number

y/n waiting for 3 rings until there was a voice.

"hello?" said the voice, groggily. "this is m/n l/n, owner of l/n's interior design, how can i help you?"

"mom?"

there was a pause. "excuse me?"

"mom... it's y/n."

"oh my god! how are you sweetie! why are you calling so late?"

"i'm in philly right now."

her mother gasped. "i'm sending my driver right away. why didn't you tell me before? i could've gotten you a ride."

"i took the greyhound, mom."

"good, good." she sighed. "so, hows your father?"

"probably asleep. i snuck out in the middle of the night." y/ shivered. "usually if i'm awake he'd beat me, but he was so drunk he passed out at 5 in the afternoon."

her mother scoffed. "i still don't see how he won custody rights. he's terrible."

"yeah." y/n admitted. a nice black car pulled up and asked for her name. with y/n's answer, the driver got out of the car and opened the door. "the driver's here."

"okay- wait, what's his name? cause the man i sent's name is al.

"excuse me, what's your name?"

"al vingrini."

y/n nodded. "i'll see you soon, mom."

she hung up the phone and watched the philadelphia skies. finally, y/n l/n was home.
