I peeled my sticky eyes open. The white popcorn ceiling of my bedroom stared back at me. I rolled my gaze around the room, my husband was casually sleeping in the corner with his face propped on his hand. I stared back at the popcorn ceiling. I slowly moved my hands, counting my fingers. None seemed to be missing. I wiggled my toes, all accounted for. I slowly stretched, my left shoulder was a little stiff but all and all I seemed to be in one piece. I slowly sat up and yawned, my mouth was dry and cottony, it was like something had curled up and died in there. I swung my legs to the edge of the bed. I rolled my tongue around in my mouth and looked on the nightstand, there was a glass of water perched on a white napkin. I picked it up and slowly drank the contents. I set the glass down with a click. My husband jerked awake."Torrie, you're awake! Oh my Goodness I was so worried!" "Ya whatever Kylan, I'm fine.""Torrie you slipped into stage three. Baby, you know what happens if you go any farther.""Kylan, I said I'm fine. I just need to get back to work." "Baby I think you should rest a bit more, your still-" he trailed off as I stood up. I wobbled to the side and caught my balance. I took a few steps forward and lost my balance again, Kylan grabbed me by the elbows. "Hey, you should rest. Torrie, I'm serious. You need to rest." Kylan pushed me back to the bed. I stayed sitting, and he pushed my shoulders all the way down. Then he covered my body lightly with his, propping himself up on his elbows. He rested his forehead on my chest and sighed. My cheeks flushed. "Kylan get off. You're squishing me.""But I like it here. I wanna stay.""Kylan get off!" Kylan jerked his head up and rolled off of me and flopped on the bed next to me. My chest constricted and I rolled my shoulders and rolled over. "Honey I wish that you would rest a little more. I know things haven't been the same since-""We don't talk about that!" I growled"I'm sorry honey but we need to talk about it, it will help I promise.""Kylan.""Yes, love.""You mention IT again, and I'll make sure you never will have another shot."Kylan cleared his throat, "well anyway I know you've been working hard, but you need to take it easy. The fact that you slipped into stage three and didn't have stage two, it worries me." "Kylan I'm fine, it's just not time to take a break yet. Remember, the nurse she said that everything has a time and a place it's not time to take it easy Kylan.""Honey I think that was just a phrase she used, I don't think that you should take it this seriously, she was just trying to give you something to use for coping.""No it's so true, there is a time and a place for everything!""Ok honey." He buried his face in his pillow. He was so unreasonable, using a woman's words and then trying to turn them against me. He had no idea, he was just a stupid man. Kylan shifted next to me and laid so that his arm draped over my hips, he started drawing patterns over my stomach as I closed my eyes. I must have fallen asleep at some point, I peeled my sticky eyes open again, and the sunlight glinted harshly at me. I covered my face with my hands and let out a grown. Kylan shot up in the bed, he must have dozed off too. "What's wrong?""Nothing the suns just bright. It's giving me a bit of a headache."Kylan was silent for a while, "do you want some water?""Sure, and some ibuprofen while you're up, my shoulder is starting to ache as well."He rolled off the bed, his bare feet slapped down the hardwood stairs into the kitchen. I heard the tap turn on and then muffled voices. I sat up slowly and tried to open my eyes again, the sun was so bright. I pulled myself into a standing position and wobbled blindly into the bathroom. I felt for the toilet and relieved myself, the acrid scent of urine filled my nostrils, and I cracked my eyes open. The liquid in the bowl was amber colored and tinged with red. I hurriedly shut my eyes and flushed the mess down the toilet. I rested my elbows on the sink as I washed my hands, letting the cold water run over the backs of my hands. A light spray dampened my wrists and forearms causing goosebumps to form. I tried to open my eyes again. Even the gentle sunlight from the window was too much, my head started to pound, and I scrubbed my face with my wet hands letting the cold water drip onto my tee shirt. I stumbled back into the bedroom and collapsed into the bed. Two men entered my bedroom, and only one of them was my husband, the second trailed slightly behind him, and I stared at him judgementally. "Torrie you're not getting better, you need help.""I'm fine Kylan, I just need some ibuprofen.""There was blood in your pee wasn't there?!" he accused me"Just a bit but that's to be expected, I did get scratched after all.""Torrie," the other man spoke, "I'm Dr. Doyle, your husband called me, do you know where you are?""I'm in my own bed. In my house, that's on my property.""Good, can you tell me what's going on?""Actually I can't, that information is classified.""You can tell him, Torrie, he's with us." My husband piped up in the corner"Oh well, then I guess it's fine then isn't it!" I sassed "why don't I just spill everything to any random stranger in my house.""Quite the attitude you have my dear," Doyle said."I'm not your dear" I slurred.Doyle turned to my husband, "do you know what happened?""She was scratched by an Anthrosquille, she didn't slip into the infection stages like normal, she missed stage two completely."Doyle turned back to me "alright Dr. Brunner is that what happened?""Maybe? Or maybe not. I'd really appreciate it if you got out of my house. 'Dr. Doyle'""I'll leave as soon as I'm done, Dr. Brunner." Doyle turned to my husband again. "I'll need you to hold her down for me.""What! Why?" my husband shrieked. "The medicines I'm going to give her are intramuscular injections, and they are quite painful. I also need to hook her up to an I.V. catheter and put in a urinary catheter. I'm going to give her a sedative eventually as well, so her body can rest.""Can't you give the sedative first?""Unfortunately I cannot Mr. Brunner. The medicines will counteract each other. I have to administer the first three then put in the catheters and then the sedative. The doses that I give are all time-sensitive, so they work in the way we need them to."My husband let out a shaky breath "ok, let get it over with."He walked over to the side of my bed, and I sat up, "Kylan, No! I don't give you permission for this!""I'm sorry honey, you can punish me later, but I have to hold you down.""Kylan! No!" he wrapped his arms around me, "Stop it! Stop?" And rolled me over, so I was on top of him "Stop! Please!" he wrapped his legs around my hips as I wiggled "Please?" He nodded to the doctor, and placed a hand on the back of my head, pushing my face into his collar bone. A set of cold hands pulled my pants down to my knees, and I thrashed. I screamed into Kylan's shoulder, the sound muffled and strained. The first needle went in, and I screamed prying my head away from Kylan's chest, the sound echoed in the room. My leg burned as the medicine entered, Kylan shoved my head down spit and sweat flecked is a grey shirt, the damp material stuck to my nose. The burning started to subside when the second needle pierced my flesh, I arched my back, my mouth open in a silent scream. My eyes flew open as I gasped for breath, the sun blinded me as Kylan pulled me sharply back into his chest. My nose hit hard on his collar bone and I bit his chest. He yelped and pulled me tighter. His warm breath puffed on the top of my head ruffling the hair. I clenched my jaw, and he arched his back into my mouth groaning. "Are you alright?" Doyle asked"Ya," my husband panted "she just bit me.""I'm going as fast as I can, just hold on a little while longer.""Take all the time you need doc" he choked out My body started to relax, and I struggled to keep my jaw clenched, slowly my teeth came away, and I laid completely immobile on my husband's chest. "Ok last painful one. Ready?"My husband nodded his chin bumping on the top of my head. My muscles tightened I wiggled weakly. I managed to free an arm and swiped my husband across the face with my nails. He let go of the other arm to protect his face, and with my newfound freedom, I reached toward the doctor clawing at the needle mark. Kylan grabbed me again with his legs pitching me forward into his chest again. His arms cinched down over my torso. I wiggled trying to free myself. Slowly the pain faded and I relaxed. I gasped for breath, my throat burning. I tried to wet my mouth but my tongue just stuck to the roof of my mouth there was a slight pinch in my arm then I was rolled over. My head rested on Kylan's stomach as he crossed his legs over my hips. I clawed at his legs as he held my thighs up with a bedsheet. I clenched my eyes even tighter, and I tore desperately my fingers coming away wet from my husband's arm. A urinary catheter was inserted, and I clawed in discomfort. My foot connected with something substantial and I heard a grunt. The pain faded after a while, and I was released from the hold. There was one more pinch, and the bed rolled back and forth as I slipped out of consciousness. I could hear mumbling. I drowsily opened my eyes, the sunlight didn't hurt as badly this time. I looked around the room then down at the bed. Blood flecked the sheets that twisted around my body. Several pillows were thrown to the floor, a metal stand held a bag of fluids over my head. I clenched my hands at the mess, my fingers tingled as I opened them, my arms sluggish. I felt like the bed was sucking me in as I struggled to sit. The room spun frantically I clutched at the sheets as I waited for it to pass. Once it did I ripped the I.V. line out, a thin stream of liquid danced in the weak sunlight before I pinched off the track. My limbs were heavy and stiff, as I dangled my toes over the edge of the bed. I flexed them back and forth, then stood slowly. I shuffled to the bathroom and plopped myself onto the toilet. I pulled the urinary catheter out, gagging from the sensation. I heard the radio crackle, and I pulled my pants back up and washed my hands. My head felt fuzzy, and I rested my head in my hands for a while. I stumbled downstairs, gripping the handrail with enough force to take it out of the wall. I stumbled into the foyer, my husband and Doyle were sitting in the kitchen. Two sweating glasses with water rested on the counter next to my husband's bandaged arms. They both looked up at me as I entered, my husband immediately stood and tried to push me back upstairs. I pushed him away silently."Baby you should still be resting." He called after me. "I'm fine, I heard the radio." "It's just the staff talking, they're just organizing the new shipments." Doyle piped in"Ya, I don't need your input thanks, keep your nose out of my shipments" I called over my shoulder as I filled a glass with water. "They have it handled honey, just rest ok?" my husband said as he walked up behind me. He placed his hands on my shoulders and started rubbing them."Kylan, I suggest you stop. I have work that needs to be done."The hands were removed slowly, and I felt my husband take a step back. I raised the glass slowly and let the water brush my lips. I set the glass down with a click, "Doyle I suggest you get out of my house, and Kylan prepare yourself, you were way out of line, and it's time to pay for your actions. I am going to check on my employees, when I get back, I expect you both to be good little boys and follow directions." I turned around and marched out of the house, not bothering to wait for an answer.
