He never thought this would ever happen. He'd already resigned himself to a life without her. She wasn't his and she never was. He wasn't even supposed to want her. He couldn't.
She was his brother's first and last love.
How fucked up is that?
He's a grown up for fuck's sake. He isn't supposed to moan over a girl anymore. At least that was what he believed before.
Before her.
They all met back in high school, when life was much simpler and the most of your worries were if you were going to pass your next pop quiz or if you would rather go to college or take a gap year.
His brother fell in love at first sight. She was that easy to love, with her golden brown locks and her green eyes, her infinite kindness and selflessness.
Of course his brother wasn't the only one to fall head over heels. He wasn't far behind, it just took him a bit longer to realize what he was feeling and an even longer time to act on it; long enough for his brother to make his move.
Long enough for him to lose the chance to tell her that she was everything to him.
So, he settled for being the best friend; the one she came to when his brother acted like an asshole and they had one of their mini-breakups.
They've known her for over 10 years now and he still cannot get over how he feels. Not only that, but they're also about to get married, in two weeks in fact.
He was the best man of course.
It was absolute torture watching them prepare for the wedding. Of course, he was happy for his brother, but that doesn't mean that his heart isn’t fucking breaking. He wasn't even the sentimental type at all.
By the time the bachelor party came round, he was ready to come up with any sort of excuse to bail on the wedding. He only managed to get through it by sitting in the corner and ignoring everyone. They all always thought he was a brooding asshole anyway.
The next day everyone was a drunken mess, most of all his brother who stumbled out of his room at the hotel that they were staying at half naked. He looked so pale and shit scared too.
Apparently, he'd left with one of the strippers the night before.
All hell broke loose when word got back to the bridal party.
One of the best men was married to one of the bridesmaids and let it slip that the groom went MIA with a stripper the night before, which prompted the bride to come running to the hotel only to find her husband-to-be in a compromising situation.
By the time, things began to settle down; and by settle down I mean everyone was informed that the wedding was not going to happen, he made his way to her house.
Completely without any personal agenda, he was genuinely worried about her.
Her mother opened the door and let him up to her room.
Fortunately, she wasn't completely mad at him. They talked for hours and he tried to alleviate her pain by bringing up the good times they all spent together. It wasn't such a good idea, since whenever he brought his brother up, she would shut off completely.
He kept going back to her house day after day.
Call him crazy, but the more he went back, the more relaxed and back to her old self she seemed to be.
Today, he knocked on her door and she opened with a smile lighting up her face as though she was waiting behind the door for his arrival.
He smiled back.
They may be hope for them after all.
