I've already been awake as my alarm goes off. Couldn't quite get my head to stop fantasizing about everything that could happen to me now. As I press the off button I allow myself to quietly lay in my bed for a few more seconds before my Mum starts turning everything upside down. Even though my life has been a mess lately, just the thought of what is coming next makes my lips tingle and my heart beating faster than what's probably considered healthy. But in a good way. I sit up on my bed. Looking around and feeling in awe of what I have accomplished. Going to Stanford has always been a dream of mine. And now the day has finally arrived.
After taking a quick shower I pack the last few things into my bag and turn around one last time. "Are you ready, Lia?", my Mum asks from downstairs. I nod my head disregarding that she can't see me. Full packed I walk to my Mom as she awaits me with a big smile and sparkling eyes. "Oh you look beautiful.", she says and I can see that she is trying to contain herself from crying. Regardless of me following my dream I am still her little girl that just started to walk and will probably forever maintain this status. But she is right. I am dressed in my favourite jeans and shirt. My wild hair is put in its place into a bun but nevertheless some light baby hair just doesn't want to do as I told them. But I managed to not let it look messy. I was told that I got my hair from my father. He died when I was really young so I don't remember much of him. But with that hair he will always be a part of me because it's almost a silver white. And with my bright green eyes that I got from my mother it makes an unusual look that with time I managed to love.
I give my Ma a friendly smile and hug her. "It will be alright. You will be alright.", I promise her and earn a little smirk. "Come on let's go. Or you will miss your flight."
I nod and the both of us get into the car and drive to the airport.
It's a quiet drive. None of us manages to say a word but in exchange for that the send off at the airport is as dramatic as it can get.
"Promise me to call everyday.", she says as her voice is starting to snap. I promise her that and also that I will take care of me. And with an excitement that I can't even put into words, we say goodbye and I enter my flight. It is almost lunch time as I arrive at Stanford. My drive in the cap was exhausting but as I open the door of the car the view that is in front of my eyes stuns me. And in that very moment it hit me. I've done it. I've got to the place I've always dreamed about.
I take my bag, pay the driver and go to the supervisors which are handing me my keys und the information papers that I need. I've been told that my stuff was already brought to my room. That's not surprising since my mother had send my belongings to a friend of hers who so happens to be a professors here. I thank the girl who gave me the key and start to find the way to my dorm. It's not a long way but I am distracted by all the things around me. Everywhere are people. Old friends meeting each other and new ones who are searching for their dorms. I can spot some parents that are saying goodbye to their kids and within a second my mother crosses my mind. I hope that she is okay. I send her a text that I arrived safely and that everything is alright.
As I manage to find my dorm I see a girl my age sitting on one of the beds. It's not a big room but it's big enough for the both of us. It includes two beds, two wardrobes and two secretaries. All in a dark wood that matches the white carpet on the floor. The bathrooms in this building are shared ones. But I think that I can live with that. "Hello and welcome!", screams the girl full of joy and jumps into my arms. Slightly confused about the hug, I need some seconds to return the gesture. "My name is Amanda. And you must be Amalia."
Amanda has a friendly and soft voice and with her big smile she seems pretty loveable. So I decide to like her. I nod my head and give her a little smile. "Since your stuff was already on the bed by the window I took the other one. Hope you don't mind." Amanda talks fast and you can literally feel her excitement. "Yeah sure. That's fine with me.", I simply answer her, because I don't know what else to say. I look to her side of the room which is already finished and smirk. Her side is full of posters from bands like Nirvana and The Beatles. My Mum would have liked her. "So a friend of mine will come and pick me up any minute. I thought that maybe you want to unpack first. But if you like we could go have dinner later.", she says and gives me a shy look. I'm surprised. She doesn't seems to be the shy person. Her outlook reflects her side of the room. Amanda's hair is in a neon orange and cut to a long bob with bangs. She wears ripped jeans and a crop top that shows of an amazing body. And in contrast to all of that are her Asian looking eyes that seem to hide all the joy of the world. As I nod someone knocks at our door and walks inside our room.
"Hey Andy, are you coming or what?" A boy with blond hair shows up and his smile is as big as the one from Amanda. I can see why they are friends.
He has the same clothing style as her but on his arm are parts of a tattoo that is hiding under the shirt. It's already to late as I realize that I was staring at him. "Well look at that. And who are you?", he says with a charming voice. Amanda just sighs by the look that the boy is giving me. "Just quit it Jack. She is my roommate." "I am Lia.", I answer him and he shakes my hand. "And you are...?" "You can call me your boyfriend.", he interrupts. My face must have shown the shock I felt because he suddenly starts to laugh. "Did that ever work?", I ask and he shakes his head. "Well, but I won't stop trying." He winks at me and I laugh. Amanda starts making sound as if she would choke on something to get the attention back. "Oh don't be sad Andy Mandy. You will always remain my one true love.", Jack says to Amanda and grabs to her waist to hug her from behind. And that's the moment the the smile freezes on my face and my thoughts switches to another place. Liam. He used to hug me like this when he was still...
"What are you two doing so long. I won't wait for ever." Another voice suddenly turns up and brings me back to reality. The voice is deep and just by the sound of it my body starts shaking. I look up and stare into the darkest eyes I've ever seen. I've never seen anything like it and even though I feel a little frightened I can't look away. Because some how I know them. I just can't get my mind on it. "Sorry Lucien. We were just about to leave.", Amanda says and waves at me. "See you later Lia." I shake my head a little and wave back as she leaves the room with the two boys. Jack winks at me one last time as he enters the door but all I can think about are those dark black eyes. There was not one emotion inside of them.
Exhausted from all the tumult I sit down on my bed to rest a few second before I start unpacking all my stuff. It's already been a lot
to take in and I've just been here for a few hours. What a day....
