I've always been different from others. When I was in middle school, when all the guys would have crushes on different girls in my class, I never had any.
I was always closer with girls rather boys in friendship ways, but I had a few friends who were guys. From the few guy friends I had, we all shared the same problem, we never got crushes on females. And we didn't understand why. It's what we bonded over. I'm still friends with them to this day.
Once after school, I walked in my house and I found my mother at the dining table. This was very unusual. She's never early from work and I have no dad so what was wrong?
"What are you doing here mom? You rarely come early from work."
"I'm here to tell you something important Tae. I took some time off work specially for today."
"Oh really? What do you wanna tell me?"
"Well, you may have noticed how you're not getting any crushes on girls right?"
"Yeah but what's wrong with that though?"
"Tae you're intersex. You have the outside body of a man but you also have the female reproduction system in you. It's also the reason why your dad left. You can get periods, and you can get pregnant although it has an even less chance for that to happen with a male rather than with a woman. I'm expecting that your period will come soon considering your behavior lately so I've come prepared and bought you some pads. To clear up things, yes you can still get hard and still have sperm but you also have the egg cells so life is gonna be annoying for you. All I want you to know is that I support you Tae, and don't ever let yourself get down on this. It happens all over the world so don't worry about it. If you have any difficulties please come to me."
I was shocked. All I could do was stand there and let the tears come out of my eyes, leaving trails down my cheek until finally dropping to the floor. Warm arms wrapped around me as I clung tight to her shirt at the back.

As predicted by my mother I got my period two weeks later
"MOOOOOOOOM! WHAT'S THIS BROWN STUFF IN MY BOXERS?" I've never had a problem with my mom seeing me naked. She's family isn't she?

I heard footsteps coming towards the bathroom door and I saw it open swiftly to reveal my mother with a worried look on her face.
"What's that?" I asked with a disgusted tone to my voice. I showed her my underwear. There was a deep brown stain all over my boxers and it looked creamy and gross, like melted poop with a mixture of blood.
"Oh honey," I heard her say under her breath. "You've got your period."
My eyes began to water and soon enough I was bawling in her arms with a new pair of underwear with a pad on.
"Shhh, it's okay. It just means you're all grown up now TaeTae. It's okay." She kept repeating those words to me in a soft whisper until I calmed down enough. I slept in my mother's bed that night. ___________________________
"MY STOMACH HUUUURRTTSS."
"Tae, honey you'll get used to it."
"BUT IT HUUURRTTTSS."
"They're called period cramps honey. I don't need this you've already been even moodier than usual the past two days because of your period I don't need to deal with this."
"Is this what you had to go through every month???"
"Yes Tae and so will you."
"UGHHHHH."
I kept on whining until my mom gave me a hot water bottle to put over my stomach.
"Thank you for the bottle."
"You're welcome now please stay quiet I have this problem at work which i have to solve."
"Before you leave, how am I gonna manage for school?"
"Just ask for a bathroom pass and make sure to have pads hidden in pockets or under sleeves."
"Thanks mom."
"You're welcome honey."
