Chapter 1: The Bizarre Event of Floor 54
The morning started off calm, quiet, normal really, the perfect conditions for something bizarre to happen. Way up on the 54th floor the large windows of a Los Angeles office building shook in a windless sky. Unbeknownst to the workers inside that day a magical event was about to take place.
Typically, the skyscrapers in downtown Los Angeles swayed little even when earthquakes rocked the city streets or storms pelted their sides. Perhaps the safest place to be in the event of a natural disaster, brilliant engineers had thought of every scenario during its construction, everything but one. Today the forecast called for a bright, beautiful, and blissful day. Coffee was brewing, donuts were being eaten, and coworkers were saying their 'good mornings.' The cheerful tones of computers booting up, the scuffling of paperwork, and the jarring rings of telephone calls echoed across the office space. No one could have planned for what came next.
It started as a low rumble, a faint rattling of glass hitting metal. The office workers accustomed to the wobbling of the building and its creaks and moans, stood from their cubicles to stare curiously at the glass walls around them. Their first thought was an earthquake but a quick glance to the street below showed a normal city pace. People walked on the sidewalks and moved in and out of cars with no hesitation that the earth was shaking. That's when it happened.
The rumbling became a roar, a sound of someone screaming. The windows vibrated violently, clattering in their frames. A crack formed across one pane, then to another and another until every centimeter was filed. This spider web of cracks halted for a moment; the atmosphere filled with dread. People yelled, "Get away from the windows!" There was a rush of bodies. A panic of arms and legs tripping and falling over chairs and desks. At last a bright light filled the office space, a silence penetrated the air, and shards of every glass window along the building's side rained down on the peaceful city below.
