Luis’ POV
“Ayyyyy, Dan, your favourite month is May, right buddy?” I shouted, as I taunted Daniel, my schoolmate, on his first day back. May, who was new that year, stood there staring at me with a blank expression. I couldn’t tell what she was fathoming, but she clearly wasn’t enjoying the humour. Daniel wasn’t either apparently, as he looked, rather embarrassedly, at the floor of the locker bay. May then flicked her long brown hair back and stormed off. We watched her walk off, and I noticed that Dan was staring at her as her hips swung from side to side.
“Eyes on the prize?” I joked, laughing at him. He eyed me with a cold expression, before I punched him lightly on the shoulder and suggested that we follow her to explain my joke. He nodded, and his dark brown eyes loosened their grip on my pale blue ones. We followed her out of the locker bay, passing the faces of the people we’d spent nearly half a year with by now. Some were friends, and we greeted them and swiftly returned to our main cause, but others were not so warm in our hearts, and we kept our heads down as we passed them.
We reached the main hall, where most of the students hung out at lunch. As we took a few steps in, Dan nudged me and pointed over to May, who had found her best friend, Hazel. As soon as I saw her long, perfect light brown hair, I knew Dan was planning something, because he knew how I felt about her, and I’d just made a fool of him in front of May a few moments earlier. I panicked, and quickly told Dan that I was only joking about what I’d said and that I’d sort it out for him.
“I’m a wog, wogs like revenge, cuz” he replied, with that evil tone that he spoke in when he had a wicked idea that would entertain him for an extended period of time at the expense of someone else. He continued his course, as if it was his destiny to ruin my day.
“Hey Hazel,” he started, as she turned to look at he and I, “Luis is interested in some sexual-” I pulled him away face first so he couldn’t finish saying what I feared he would say most. He fell to the ground, and the shocked expression on his face spoke volumes about how rare that particular occurrence was.
“Sorry, he’s having a bit of a blank at the minute, might need to reboot him” I said casually, hoping to impress with some harmless joking. Hazel laughed as I smiled and turned to Dan, who smiled back, but with a tinge of sarcasm.
“So I see” she replied, and to my surprise, her cheeks began to blush. She looked down, and I looked away, nervous as hell.
“Budayyyyy” sung out from across the hall, unfortunately exposing the poor acoustics of the room, as Eric, my loveable, loud and down to earth best friend shouted at us from across the hall. He began striding towards us, and he wasn’t alone. Bridget, his new girlfriend, was draped across his arm, her long, straight blonde hair bobbing as she walked. They stopped when they reached us, and Bridget detached from Eric’s arm.
“What’s happening E?” I smiled, holding out a hand. He took it, and it shook it from my toes to my head, which was hard to do considering I stood at 6”3’ and he was 5”9’.
Hazel muttered a hello, as Eric glanced at her, waved, and then looked back at me and winked. I rolled my eyes.
With a “get in son”, he left to talk to someone else he’d spotted on the other side of the room. I watched him go, hoping he’d come back soon. I looked back to Hazel, wishing to continue my seemingly good progress. As soon as my head turned back, she fell forwards. I was standing only a metre away from her, so when she fell, she fell directly into me. Her body hit mine, as I attempted to catch her mid-fall. As I soon realised, the momentum she had picked up was enough for two people. I began to fall backwards, as we both plummeted towards the floor. I felt my back collide with the hard material of the ground, and the back of my head soon followed. Darkness covered my eyes as they slowly closed by themselves, and I drifted off into wonderland.
Eric’s POV
The minute I turned around to see what the screaming was about, I felt a sharp rush of air go past, and I turned to see Daniel running in the direction of the staffroom. I looked at Bridget, who was standing on the other side of me, and then ran off to follow him. When I finally caught up, he was about five strides away from the staff room door, with absolute horror in his eyes.
“The hell is going on?” I said as I caught my breath, flustered and extremely confused.
“Its Luis, he fell over and, and…”
Before he could finish his sentence, Mrs. Howard opened the door of the staff room, wanting to know what the cause of the screaming was. I looked at her with a puzzled expression, but Dan was quick to answer.
“We need an ambulance, now!” he said, as I began to put the bloodstained puzzle pieces together in my mind. All the other teachers immediately looked up from their food and newspapers to see what the commotion was about.
“Who’s hurt? What happened? Bring me to them please, where did this happen?” the teacher quickly began asking the questions she felt necessary, before Dan pointed to the main hall and walked out of the staff room. I followed, and as we came out into the main hall, there was a crowd that had formed around the scene.
“MOVE! MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!” Mrs. Howard yelled, as the horrified students made way for the teacher. When they’d all shuffled away, I saw for the first time what I had feared I’d see. Luis was lying on the floor motionless, with Hazel on her knees beside him, her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. There was blood all over the floor, and Hazel was sitting in it, her knees covered in the stuff. Mrs. Howard assessed the situation fairly quickly, and sent Daniel to get her phone from the staffroom. She then turned her attention to the bobbing figure of Hazel. She walked slowly over to her, carefully to avoid slipping in Luis’ blood that was all over the floor like an ink stain on paper.
She knelt down beside her and put a hand on her back, attempting to get her up off the floor and away from the scene of a horror movie. All the while I was standing there in shock, I hadn’t noticed Jeremy had come up beside me to assess the situation too. This was his sort of thing, too, blood and all.
“What’d he do, slip on a banana peel and tear his heartstring?” he murmured as he flicked his slick brown fringe to the side of his face.
“You know it’s a bit more serious than that, Jeremy.” I snapped, to his surprise, “Look at him. This isn’t your usual injury. He’s out cold and there’s blood everywhere. Now is not the time for a joke, man.”
“Sorry” he apologised, realising my mood was not at all humorous. He turned his head to the window, where the ambulance had appeared.
“No sirens?” I pointed out, puzzled.
“Mustn’t have been any cars in its way” Jeremy shrugged, and turned his attention back to our unconscious friend.
From there on in, things became a blur. Hazel got up slowly and went to first aid to be cleaned and assessed. Jeremy, Dan and I went in the ambulance with Luis, after I called my mum, who said she’d meet us at the hospital and let Luis’ mum know what’d happened. It was a rough day, but it surely couldn’t get worse.
