Caia Henderson, 30.
Robert Strong, 34.
The beer cans lining every visible surface should have been the first clue that Caia Henderson was not having the best of times. She stared a long time in the mirror wondering just how her life had taken this road. Her dark brown eyes were usually alive with a curious and playful energy; today they just looked hollow. Her brunette locks were slicked back from her face in a low bun. Her pale skin a stark contrast against her all black outfit. She looked like a corpse. If the media didn't know better, they'd swear it was her funeral instead of his.
"We're outside the funeral proceedings for luxury hotel Mogul, Theodore Henderson. A who's who list of city socialites are in attendance to pay their final respects to the family. Henderson, who was just sixty years old passed away three days ago from a massive heart attack..."
Caia moved her critical gaze from the mirror to the television.
God,I can't believe they used that photo. How old is that thing? She mused as an image of her family flashed across the screen. It had to have been while she was still in college. It was definitely before her mother's new nip tuck hobby had started.
As if summoned, a familiar ringtone began to blare from Caia's cellphone alerting her that her mother was calling. Caia was struggling to buckle the last strap on her least favorite pair of heels when she answered.
"I'm coming. I'm about to walk out the door." she said as soon as she heard the line connect.
A scoff came before the posh voice of Eleanor Henderson spoke, "Do you have any idea how unfitting it will look for us to be late to your father's funeral?"
Caia rolled her eyes and stifled a much needed scream. "I'm walking out the door now." She grabbed her purse and keys from their resting place and proceeded out the door.
"Honestly, Caia. I told you to be downstairs waiting. Of all the days to -"
"Just think how much faster I would be there if I wasn't trying to lock my door AND argue with you, Mother." Caia replied in an exasperated tone before hanging up.
