Waking up, I saw a tall, dark figure in the corridor. My vision was blurred and I couldn't make out his face. I sat up and saw the woman who was there before.
"You really should be more careful. You almost fell into the pit," she said. Her frown faded into a smile as she turned towards the figure.
"Put her with the rest, Luciferia." He had a slight irritation to his voice. "Mephisto, you might want to look at this one," the woman said.
"Fine," he said, walking over.
"She has a resentment like I haven't seen anywhere else," she explained. "Well, except for you, of course."
As my vision cleared, I saw the man standing over me. He had furrowed brows, with a mystified expression. The silence was deafening.
Suddenly, Luciferia said, "What's wrong, Mephisto?"
"Oh nothing," his frown turned into a smile. "Nothing at all. She... she... she is my child."
Luciferia looked dumbfounded. "How? She is human." For a moment she gave him a look that quite obviously meant Have you gone mad?
I sat up more. "I am Phoe..."
"Phoenix," he interrupted. He said it like there was something very fascinating about my name. I didn't see anything fascinating about it at all. "Welcome to Gehenna daughter of mine." Daughter of mine? He's my father? I thought. Up to that point, I hadn't thought about who my real parents were since I was in the adoption center.
"Well," he interrupted my thoughts. "It seems like no time has passed..." He scratched his head and looked off into the distance.
"Uh, I'm 12," I said.
"Precisely," he replied. "I didn't think I'd see you this soon, but you age as a human." He turned towards me, smiling. "How would you like to come to my office? I'll explain everything." He didn't give me time to reply. "Luciferia, leave us alone for awhile."
We walked down the corridor and up a stairwell into another corridor that looked different than the other one. It had a black tile floor and walls of fire. I couldn't see a ceiling. I didn't see anything. It wasn't even that it was so dark I couldn't see anything. There was no dark, there was no light. There was nothing. That was very inconceivable to me. The more I thought about it, the more my mind started to overwork itself as I tried to comprehend the idea of it and see something. Anything. The more I looked up the more I felt faint and a bit woozy. The man turned my head to look towards him.
"This is my office."
