In which a boy reminisces through his memories of the girl he loves.
Johnny POV
-flashback-
"Johnny, Lauren! We're going to go meet our new neighbors! They have a girl your age Lauren, 11, and another one a year older than Johnny!"
"Wait! So I'll be the only boy? Aw."
"Ha! Johnny's going to be lonely!" Lauren teased me. I rolled my eyes.
"Come on you two, we'll be going to their house." Lauren and I started following our mother as she was walking to the house.
A middle aged woman opened the door. " Meredith! You came! And this must be your two children! Your daughter is so beautiful! And your son, I have the feeling he'll be quite the ladies man when he grows up!" She chuckled. "Oh come on in! Now, unfortunately, my eldest isn't here right now, but my younger daughter is here. Mackenzie! Come down!"
Footsteps coming down the staircase were heard. "Hi," said the girl. "I'm Kenzie." She had pretty chocolate brown eyes, and wavy brown hair.
"Hi Kenzie! You look so pretty! These are my two children, Lauren and Johnny. " When mentioned, we waved awkwardly.
"Why don't you show them around?"
"Okay. Come on, we'll go to the backyard."
"So, Kenzie, you're twelve too? My brother is thirteen." Lauren said.
"Her brother," I interrupted. " Can speak for himself. Hi. I'm Johnny." Kenzie smiled.
"Tell me about yourselves. What would you guys like to be in the future?" She asked. "I'd like to become a singer."
"Really?" I exclaimed, and she nodded. "Me too! That's so cool! We could write songs together! I play guitar! "
"Yeah! I'd like that! I've tried playing, but now days I don't have time because of seventh grade," She responds with. Our eyes meet, both gleaming with glee and excitement. I don't know about her, but, at that moment I completely forgot about Lauren. That was, until, she mentioned that she wanted to become an actress.
And so, our lives together went on like this. Mackenzie's backyard had become our spot. With some occasional appearances from the older sibling, it was just us three. We were best friends. Well, at least for the next four years.
-flashback end-
"Oh! I'm so sorry." As I was closing my locker, I heard a familiar voice. A girl's body bumped into mine.
"It's okay- I wasn't looking, " I state, looking to see who I bumped into. My eyes widened when I saw who it was.
Many feelings flashed through me, including pain, hurt, and sadness.
"Mackenzie. " I whispered softly. Was it really her?"Hey, Johnny." She was beautiful, as she has always been, but something looked different about her. Her eyes seemed pained. Does she really not want to see me that much? So much that it hurts her?
"Hey," I try to start a conversation. "I- uh- How are you?"
"I'm good, Ashton's been really good." The look of pain left her eyes, replaced with happiness, and- somehow- fear. I guess he makes her really happy, but why fear? Was she afraid to be seen with me?
"We haven't talked in a while," I state. She's moved on, she has a boyfriend, a new friend group. You don't need me anymore.
"Yeah, but John," she started. I winced, she hasn't called me that ever.. ever since she met Ashton. "You know th-that I don't want it to be like this. I-It just can't-- I-I've mis-"
"Come on Kenzie, we're going to be late. " She was cut off by a boy's voice. Ashton. My eyes narrowed. Of course, he was here.
"I have to go," she took a deep breath. If I wasn't listening so attentively I would not have heard her whisper what she said next. "I'm sorry." And she was gone, gone with him.
The way she said it, there were so many emotions. It sounded sad, lonely, pained, longing even.
I was lost in thought, I didn't notice my sister come up. She must have seen everything. "You know she's missing you. Sh-she's just in denial."
"What are you talking about? Do you see how happy she is with him? Yeah, she's been missing me," I scoff, sarcastic and bitter. I was hurt, sad, confused, vulnerable, heartbroken -and Lauren knew that.
"Deep down. She's been missing you deep down." Was all I heard before footsteps walking away.
When I reached home after school, I went straight to my room, and landed on my bed, still thinking about her. She was running through my head the whole day. She's always in my head. "I just wish she knew that I'm in love with her." I groaned and rolled over, closing my eyes.
Inspired by Johnny's song Deep Down. A lot of the lines/sections are kind of the same. I'm really bad at writing angst and sad stories.
