Moving isn't something new in my life, I've been in six different homes within the last one year. Now I'm moving to a new state with a family that I chose over paper and now I'm in a car with my officer, Garry, travelling across the country.
The last home was in, my dad came at night and dragged me home saying that it was past curfew. So the agency decided that I'll get a family where my dad can't find me till he becomes sober or my mom's sentence is reduced. Garry doesn't like music so I'm stuck in the car listening to his his 'speech'
"You should give yourself a chance at life, stop thinking about your parents so much. The agency is working on your mother's case and your dad is going to rehab. Plus this family is one that we have worked with for a long time, they're nice and kind. I mean they are the dream family so I guess you'll fit In nicely." Garry said.
"That's the thing Garry, I'm not perfect, I don't fit in a 'dream family' I come from a broken family. There is where I fit Garry."
I bursted. I was just from my home this morning and my dad kept crying saying how much he'll miss me and that it's for the best and I agreed with him for the first time in a really long time. He always makes this decisions and confessions when he's sober and only then does he tell me stories of my mother, I'm basically her.
We stop by a shop to get some supplies where I take the opportunity and stuff a packet of sweets into my monkey bag, one can never be too sure.
As we approach the house, Garry starts, "Look, I know that you are not used to this kind of family but we thought that considering you are moving to a whole new state, on the other side of your childhood, we could as well give you the best accommodation. All families we asked you to pick from are all loaded but I'm not surprised that you chose the one with the highest networth."
I just chuckled and focused on the electric gate opening before my eyes. The mansion that was unraveled to my eyes was drool worthy.
"Close your mouth kiddo, don't swallow the house, you'll have time for that. Speaking of time, I don't have that, I need to be at the airport in an hour." He stepped out of the vehicle.
"You mean... We drive the whole fucking way here and the fucking government pays for you to go back. And here I was thinking that we children were the priority." I exclaimed.
"Then you'll be happy to know that you are a priority, to me and to the government. I had the option of flying us here but I was sure that this drive would do good for you. And just so you know, I'm going on vacation, a much needed vacation. Check on your language young lady, some families don't like children like you." We were now approaching the front door and the butterflies in my stomach may have reproduced elephants and now the elephants were doing a stampede in there.
How could the baby elephant even fit in the vagina of a butterfly and what type of butterfly would the male semen be to fertilize something so small.
Weird thoughts like this keep me going, makes me forget that I live a crappy life.
"But you love children like me right?" I ask him.
"Yes Angelica, I love children like you." He replied bluntly.
"So you're not gonna quit me. I swear, it's not my problem that every home I go to, everyone tries to make things seem okay. Just because I know the rough true facts about reality doesn't mean that I wanna change my point of view. It's the only part of mom that I've got." I sigh.
"I know kiddo but it isn't my choice, by the way, the court finally allowed letters between your mum and you. Now that you're gonna be kinda stable and this is the begging of your writings." A white envelope was handed to me. Only knowing that it was the first ever communication that I've had with my mother since I saw her in that police car, they wouldn't even let me go to the trial. I still don't know what she's in for.
The couple that opened the door after we knocked was one that can make you believe in happy ever afters. The woman looked like a nerd and the man, a bad boy. They fit so well together and the woman was just a little bit shorter than me.
"I take it that you are Angelica and Garry?" The woman asked politely stretching her hand towards us followed by her husband's.
"Yes we are." Garry replied. I was still in shock, butterflies in my stomach and I couldn't stop crushing the letter that was just given to me by Garry. There was a moment of silence before the woman broke it and opened the door to let us in.
"We don't want to keep you for long so can we get the paperwork done." She stated.
This can't be good. Parents who are quick to dismiss the officer are the cruel ones. I have heard several cases of their merciless torture to the children.
After signing the papers, which I was used to by now, Garry was on his way and I was given the tour of the house.
I chose the room opposite the storage room and a back door separating them. I colour theme was black and white. I mean, the two most opposite colors living in perfect unison.
I settled in quickly then lay on the bed surfing the internet for cute boys, memes and funny clips.
After a while, I got bored and decided to explore a bit so I got out of my room ready to escape to the back yard for late night swimming till I bumped into a hard body with the most beautiful emerald green eyes.
"Jesus!" I exclaimed pissed.
"No cursing in this house." The green eyed wall said in a British accent. I noticed a girl who live looked drunk and horny at the same time.
The boy placed his index finger on his lips shushing me. I just nodded and paved way for him and his drunk.
The pool was cool and refreshing, just what I needed to reflect on my life and think about my future.
Mothers day is coming up soon and I'd really love to do something with my mom this year like we used to when I was still eight.
We'd have breakfast in bed courtesy of my dad then go on a road trip to the next town then watch a marvel movie and eat ice cream over a dinner date. Like wise, I also did that with my dad on Fathers day. They weren't bad parents, they actually showed me the sacrifices one makes to be a good parent. For example, neither liked marvel movies but they'd make sure that they were there with me when they were in the cinemas and ensured that they mastered every character and every scene plus they always kept the romance going. On their anniversary, they'd spend every moment with each other and re lived their young years where they were still partying and had fun. They came home tipsy but not too drunk and danced in the sitting room all night till they couldn't stand no more and slept on the couch till morning.
My life was great till the LAPD came knocking on our door and put my mom in cuffs. I remember that day like it was yesterday.
The night became darker by the minute so I got that it was dinner time. The dinner that was arranged for me to meet the family.
"Shoot! Already nine. Walk down memory lane took that long" I thought to myself rushing toward the back door of the house.
