Finally it was lunch time. Kate her way to Max, who was again sitting by the trash cans. Violet said she would catch up with Kate at lunch, she had something to sort out.
Kate opened up her sandwich and took a big bite. "Did you apologise to Violet?" Kate looked up at Max with one eyebrow raised.
Max's hair was gelled up without a single strand out of place. With his mouth full of burger he said, "Obviously not since she is not here and I-" he abruptly stopped as his eyes were locked on something on the other side of the cafeteria. His mouth was open and a piece of meat fell to his tray. Something really had Max hypnotised and Kate was curious as to what it was.
Kate turned in her chair and saw a timid Violet walking towards them. Of course, Max hadn't seen Violet's transformation. It was clear to say that he liked the new Violet.
"Close your mouth," Kate sniggered. "You'll catch flies."
Max shook himself out of his trance and swallowed the rest of his burger. He tried focusing on his food but his gaze would constantly shift to Violet.
Violet slid into the seat beside Kate, she had a smile glowing on her lips. "Four guys have come up to me today and asked for my phone number." her cheeks flushed.
Kate saw out of the corner of her eye, Max scoff and raise his eyebrows quickly.
"Just goes to show, more confidence grabs guys attention," Kate locked her gaze to Max. "And not all guys are jerks."
"Very subtle," Max rolled his eyes. "Anyway, Violet-"
"Yes," Violet was beaming as she sat up straight, she looked excited to hear what Max had to say. She chewed on her bottom lip and she looked stiff.
"Sorry about what I said yesterday," Max only half meant his words.
Kate mentally rolled her eyes at Max. She wasn't going to argue because it was lucky that he'd even pretend to be sorry. Most of the time he would act like a typical boy and make out that it wasn't his fault, even though it obviously was.
Violet's shoulders dropped along with the corners of her mouth. Since Max had always bad mouthed her appearance Kate wasn't surprised that she wanted Max to notice her efforts. Hopefully this would have been the start of peaceful lunch times. It was clear that Max was a fan of Violet's new look, since he would sneak in glances at her whenever he saw an opportunity.
"What?" Max asked Kate.
"Huh?"
"Why are you smiling like that? Have you let out gas?"
"No!" Kate's cheeks flushed. She didn't even realise that she was smiling. She liked the thought of having two best friends that actually got along. Like what normal people had.
"Are you sure?" Max persisted and began fanning his face. "It sure does stink over here."
"Maybe because you keep on sitting by the trash cans!"
Max mimicked Kate under his breath and took a sip from his can of coke.
Just as Kate was about to bite Max's head off she felt a tapping on her left shoulder. She turned in her seat and saw Adrian hovering over her. "May I-I sit with you?"
After their conversation in gym she felt more comfortable being around Adrian. He just needed someone to help him bring him out of his shell. Kate smiled up to him, "Of course."
He parked the free side of Kate and kept his head down.
Max and Violet shared an uncertain look and after a moment relaxed.
