The Corruption Within Chapter 12

The leader of the group arrayed against us smiled, licking his lips as he stared at Sally. With a subtle gesture, the group formed into a semi-circle around us, trying to box us in.

Just as the fight was about to begin, Sally's phone rang. She held up a hand towards the gang members, who stared at each other in confusion unsure what to do, and pulled it out. The song playing was 'Cry Little Sister' From the Lost Boys movie...how fitting. The little DJ examined the screen on her phone and glanced sideways at me.

"It's Alex, he sent a text message, he wants us to meet him." I had all but forgotten the men positioned in front of us. "Where?" I asked.

She ran a slender finger across the screen for several seconds and began to type back. "I didn't know you had a cell phone." I mentioned. She grinned, finishing with her reply and sliding it into her back pocket.

"It's the modern age, everyone has a cell phone, duh!" Well I don't have one, I couldn't help thinking. "There's an old refinery that's been abandoned two miles from here on the outskirts of the city. We always meet there when somethings going down."

She looked back at the heavily armed group in front of us, gauging how much of a threat they were, and most likely how long it would take to finish this fight.

"What about them?" She asked, nodding her chin in their direction.

I shook my head, indicating the dirt path to our right that left the park and connected to the street. She hesitated for a moment and finally turned to follow me.

"Hey! Ya aren't getting off that easy!" The leader yelled, but all he could do was gape in awe as we kicked up our speed and basically vanished.

Sally was able to keep up with me by my sheer size, my bulk slowing me down, but it worked. We were both pushing ourselves to the limit, our legs tearing up the ground and moving so fast it would take a good eye to catch us. I was amazed, I had no idea we could do this. The city was streaming past us in a blur of light.

I was focused primarily on the road, trying not to trip on anything and the wind blew my hair back. This was exhilarating, and I loved every second of it! I was going to have to do this more often.

I let Sally take the lead slightly, not sure where we were going, and she gave me a sideways glance. Smiling enticingly, she picked up her speed a little more, putting some distance between us. "What's the matter, can't keep up?" She called back, apparently enjoying this as much as I was.

Oh, so it was like that? I searched inside myself trying to find that extra push and my body responded. I caught back up to her easily and she looked at me with a nod of approval.

We ran for maybe two minutes, roughly a mile a minute, before coming to the outer edge of the property. By rough estimation, we had to have been running at least 60 miles per hours, and I wasn't even out of breath.

I looked up and surveyed the area, noting Sally looked a little unsure of herself. The refinery was massive, and it sat in an open construction lot. The place was typical with pillars of broken concrete and exposed rebar. The ground was a thick dirt that filled the entire site and a few construction vehicles lay abandoned. The years had not been kind to the machines and I highly doubted they would run. A 'Caution, Private Property' ribbon of yellow ran the entire length of the perimeter and signs of no trespassing were posted in strategic positions.

The central refinery was mostly all metal with traditional concrete foundation work, a mess of cracks and holes scattered about like a deadly obstacle course. The main door was massive, made of solid steel and had a large U-shaped handle. Rust was a primary resident and I couldn't help thinking of Tetanus, I hadn't had my shots lately.
