Ever since Naruto was young he would get treated like shit and overtime his hatred for the village grew. He knew that the only reason he had to stay in the village was because he had the nine tailed fox inside of him. But Naruto stayed in the village for Sasuke because he was his only friend.
They were each other's best friend but then one day Sasuke slipped up and said that he will never need Naruto for anything because he had his family. That was the limit for Naruto, he couldn't handle his only friend hating him and he couldn't handle being alone all over again.
He remembered that there was a group called the akasuki looking for him and he decided to look for them. Naruto packed his stuff and decided that he didn't need anyone in the village anymore and most certainly, he didn't need Sasuke anymore. Naruto was at the gate of Konoha village about to leave but before he turned around and said goodbye. Naruto thought that this was the last time he was ever going to see the village so he felt despair but also relief.
Then he left and went on his journey, along the way he saw Pain and didn't fight back when he took him because that's what he wanted. He did make a deal with Pain saying "Whatever your plans are with the jinchurikis I want to be the last one" and Pain nodded.
Sasuke woke up the next morning feeling regret because of what he told Naruto, so he decided that he had to go and apologize to him.
He went to Naruto's house and noticed the door was opened, so he walked in and saw that all his stuff was gone except one thing, a picture of naruto and sasuke together.
Sasuke then realized what Naruto did and ran to the hokage to tell him. When he arrived at the hokages office, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and he told him that he already knows and that he sent anbu to find him but have found nothing.
That's when Sasuke realized that he had to do whatever it takes to get him, so he told the third hokage that he wants to be in the anbu.
That's when both of their lives really started.
