Petra's POV

"Petra" stood on the stage, next to the district's escort, Felix Łukasiewicz. Felix could care less how old Petra was, or whether Petra was really Petra. This was Peter Kirkland's year, and he was so excited to volunteer that he accidentally volunteered when Felix called the girl tribute's name. And it really didn't help that Lukas thought it was a good idea to dress him like some pussy.

Allistor would be proud of his vocabulary, while Arthur wouldn't. Arthur probably wouldn't even look at him. What a cuntbag.

So Peter guessed he was from now on going to be Petra, it wasn't too bad. The boy tribute's name was called, and Petra's heart skipped a beat. "Lukas Bondevik!"

Felix did a twirl, his skirt lifting and spinning around him. Cross dressers, sheesh. Norway silently walked up to the stage, his head low and his face hidden. Arthur would always call him an emo wanker. Felix applauded, but no one else did. Raivis Galante, the previous winner, looked more on edge then he usually did.

It was a bit of a miracle that he survived the games. He was weak, timid, and small. He hid most of the time, and hadn't even killed anyone. When only him and another were left, the other died from exposure to the elements. Whatever that meant.

Time passed and Petra was in some building to say goodbye to family and friends. He wanted to hurry up and get it over with, he wanted to be put in the arena now. Tino, her adopted mother, came in first. He was crying, and immediately hugged him. "What did I tell you about volunteering?" he sobbed.

Petra hugged back, unsure of why there was this much emotion. Tino squeezed Petra and held her neck in his hands so she was looking him straight in his eyes. "I'm seeing Lukas next, I going to tell him to protect you. You let him." Tino kissed her forehead and walked out.

Ha! Protection from Lukas? Petra could protect herself. Of course, Dad was next. Mother called him Su-san, which no where close explained the silent giant. He was still silent, even now; his face a stone.

"I wish you the bes', Pet'r. But you made your mo'her very sad."

"But I didn't even do anything wrong! Why is everyone so upset? So what the whole country thinks I'm a girl."

"You don' understan' do you? If you want 'o impress someone by doing 'his, it was a mistake."

"I'm not! I just-" but why did Petra, no, why did Peter want to do this? Did he really want to impress someone, but who? And then it occurred to him.

It was the one person who would always turn his head when Peter came to visit. The one who refused to call him one of his own. The one who denied him equality and laughed in his face. The one who abandoned and left him to be sold. It was Arthur.

He wanted to do this to impress Arthur. To show he was really worthwhile and could function on his own, was it really the way to do it? He began doubting his decision, but was distracted as his dad hugged him. Hugs from him were rare, and usually painful due to his strength, but Petra accepted it.

The Peacekeepers guided Dad out. Petra felt guilt pierce her heart, but she was going to show everyone she could do this, show them she can keep it together until the end.

Mikkel came next, he was smiling, but Petra could see his face was red and puffy from crying not too long ago. "I'm so proud of you,"he said, his voice raw, and pulled Petra into his embrace.

"Lukas is proud too, and Tino and Su and everyone else. Gonna miss you," his voice cracked, but he managed to keep it together. He let Petra go, although he'd rather not. "Stay alive or so help me..."
