Chapter 1
IN THE BEGINNING...
My father died of a massive heart attack when I was sixteen and after his death it was just me, my mother and my best friends Jaelen and Teasha.
He left us everything: A 5 bedroom, 4.5 bathroom house with a 3 car garage in Laguna Beach,
California and four of the most expensive cars you could ever drive. Last thing
but not least he left us a pretty good chunk of change. So basically
we were set for the rest of our lives, but I still had a little job on the
side. I'm not one of those stuck-up superficial chicks who just spends and
spends, because I know that I have it. I have all that I need. Life couldn't be better here at 49 Emerald Bay Estates! I love it here and I don't plan on going anywhere else. Now about me: Well, my name is Christina
Vargas. I have a pecan complexion with a body and face that belongs on the front cover of someone's magazine. My ethnic background consists of Puerto Rican, Dominican and black and that is where I get my good looks, saucy attitude, long thick & curly black hair and native tongue from. I'm a 22 year old senior at Pacific University in Costa Mesa, CA where I am studying to be a RN! My internship will start at Mission Hospital right here in Laguna! My friends: Now what can I say about them? Jaelen is like a brother to me and Teasha is like my sister. We all grew up together. I mean since we were in diapers and always lived down the street from one another! That's my family for life! Now let's get into this thing called life...
"So are you going to the APZ Formal or what?" I asked Jaelen while we walked down the campus hallway.
"Yeah Chris! You know I am. I'm going to be fresh too! You know
how I do it!"
"Mmhmm! Have you decided who you're taking yet?" I asked.
"Well I was thinking about asking my best friend to accompany me." He turned to me with the cutest smile and asked me. "Will you go with me?"
With a slight smirk I answered him.
"Well... Since you begged! Yeah I'll go with you!"
"What are you going to wear?" He asked me.
I'm not telling you. You'll just have to wait and see.
Well I guess we'll both just have to wait then.
Yeah. Well I'll see you later. Have to get to class.
"Alright ma. Later."
We gave each other a quick hug and were on our way in different directions.
In the classroom...
Professor Johnson went over a lot of reviewed stuff to get us ready for an upcoming history test. So that took up the whole 45 minutes with her.
"Okay class. Don't forget to read over chapters 17 through 20. We're going to have a test on them in about 2 weeks or so. So be prepared. Have a good day!"
I knew that I would have to make another copy of the class syllabus so that I wouldn't forget anything.
I walked out of the classroom and out onto the campus with everyone else. I spotted Jaelen and some of his friends sitting on a concrete wall under a tree talking. So I started
walking towards them, but was stopped in my tracks when I saw
Shanika Taylor walk up and rub her hand across Jaelen's cheek. All I
