The sun was shining through the car window as my mom and I were heading to the outskirts of the city.As the skyscrapers became a speck, the fields of wheat and farm animals came into view next to my passenger window, I could feel the sun's warmness touch my face.
I had been trying to find a piano teacher since I had nothing else to do after summer break had started other then lounge in bed looking at the ceiling fan spin and getting rejected from part time jobs. After endless begging from my mother and countless hours searching for a piano teacher near me,I got the cheapest and closest one near my house. You could just see the hesitation in my moms face driving all the way to the country side leaving me with some random guy promising me to teach me music.
"I don't know why you picked this music teacher all the way across the country" said my mom with her eyes still stuck on the road.
"Mom it's only like a 25 minute drive from our house and this is the only teacher close to our city that's actually affordable! Plus he's the best in the business"
"Really?" She asked eagerly
"No" I said with a chuckle
She gave me an eye roll and I met her eyes with a small smile.
The car ride felt like en eternity, I guess I wasn't use to driving out in the country side but a part me liked it. Feeling the isolation of one's self was somehow comforting.I was both nervous and excited as i came closer to our destination I didn't really know what to expect other than my music teacher being a guy since I had talk to him on the phone the day before. My mother had worried a bit since she didn't really want me staying long hours alone with some random guy but she trusted me. I guess being her only child and the only other person in her life had some overprotection factors played in.
Finally we entered the driveway of a old Victorian home, the house was absolutely beautiful.A huge bay window ensured it was a focal point for the house.Stain glass also made sure the home included historic characteristics. It had a wrap around porch with several old trees all around the land.I didn't expect for this kind of house to be in the middle of nowhere but I was satisfyingly taken aback.
"Wow" said my mom "I guess teaching piano pays off huh".
As the car came to a stop, a older middle aged man came out of the house, if I had to guess he'd be in his early 40s but was still looking good for his age. He had salt and pepper hair with a matching beard and black glasses. He wasn't exactly a guy every girl would drool for but he was decent looking.
Something about him seemed so familiar but I wouldn't recognize it until later. My mom and I both got out of the car.
He greeted us both with a warm smile. "Hi you must be Rosemary! Nice to meet you"
as my hand stretched out to greet his our eyes met and for just a second I felt a strange but comforting feeling inside me but that quickly ended as my mom introduced herself very excitedly to him
"Hi! Mr..?"
"Keith Trim, but please call me Keith"
"So nice to meet you keith I'm Rosemary's mother Diane!, you have such a very lovely home"
"Thank you it's was my grandparents home, after they passed they had arranged to put it under my name and i've been taking care of it ever since "
"Well you sure do a very good job with caring for it! " I soon felt like a third wheel wanting them to end their conversation so I could start practicing, my mom had seen me from the corner of her eye in my discomfort.
"Oh I'm sorry, Rosemary should start her lesson, here's your pay for the rest of the month! Hopefully Rosemary follows through her commitment and doesn't quit early" she chuckled "Mom you can leave now!" You could see just a tiny bit of a smile forming on Keith's face but I didn't think to much of it.
"Okay hun I'm leaving! I expect you to play Beethoven 9th symphony by the end of the week"
"Hardy har har,bye mom I'll text you to come pick me later"
I had convinced her the day before to go back home when I had the lesson, I knew if she'd stay she'd hover around so excitedly taking videos of me playing the piano ready to show her friends, I love her dearly but she frustrates me sometimes. I stood there on the second step of the wide porch steps, right next to Trim, the atmosphere was a bit quiet with only the trees rustling and the birds cawing at a distance, finally as my mom was out of sight I had followed Trim inside his home.
