"I love you." I say as I pull out of the parking lot. She's quite so I look at her and not the road which I was always told to look at.
"Do you really?" she says, her eyes shining.
"Yes. With all my heart." I say smiling. She smiles back.
"I love you, too." she says as the car coming through the intersection connected with her door.
I screamed and then the world went black.
I woke up on a bed in a white-walled sterile room. I sat up but when I did I regretted it. My ribs were sore and my head felt like someone had beaten it with a rock.
"Sit down, sweetie." says a small nurse as she hands me some pills.
"What's this?" I ask.
"Advil for your ribs and for your headache." she says with a smile.
"I'm in a hospital and you give me Advil?" I ask. The nurse just smiles.
"You may leave when the Advil kicks in." she says and walks out. I lay back down and try to remember what happened.
Bright lights. Glass everywhere. Screams that weren't my own. Sarah.
I bolt upright. Sarah. I had forgotten. We were in a wreck. I had to find her.
I got up and walked out the door into a lobby. I saw the small nurse and went to her.
"Where is my girlfriend?" I ask. The nurse smiles a sad smile. She looks down.
"She's in room 13." she says. I race to the elevator. When I get to the room I don't bother knocking. I charge in and I immediately regret it.
Her whole family is sitting around her bed teary-eyed.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"Lucas. Sarah is only being kept alive by a machine. There's another 16 year old girl here who needs a heart. We're gonna give her Sarah's heart." says Sarah's Aunt.
I storm out the door, trying my best to hold back the tears. I go outside and call my friend, Derek. When he gets there he doesn't ask questions. He already knows. He drives me home.
When I go inside my grandmother rushes to meet me with a hug. I hug her back and she leads me to the couch. I cry all night in her arms.

"I can't believe I finally get a heart!" I say, excited. My mom just smiles and kisses me goodnight.
"Sleep well. Tomorrow we have to go in early." she says.
"Alright mom. Love you!" I say.
"Love you, too." she says and leaves the room. I fall asleep dreaming of better days when I might some day be able to do the things I love again.

I wake up early and get a shower so I can go to the hospital and see Sarah one last time. I eat half a Pop-tart. I drive there in my grandmother's van.
I go upstairs and stay there with Sarah's family until they leave. This girl who gets Sarah's heart better live. Or it would have been a waste. Finally the small nurse from yesterday comes up to me.
"She's in room 13." she says and walks away. They couldn't even put her in a different room?
I get up and move slowly to her room. I don't even know what to say to this girl. But I walk in the room anyway.
