mary jane clad feet hit the pavement outside the extravagant building, and a woebegone girl clutched her bag onto her shoulder, as she paced towards the one place where she could clear her mind off any cynicism, and focus on the practicality of her ambition. mackenzie saw life as an experiment, which could either go right, or horribly wrong.
a vibrant park came into her vision, and her eyes landed on the place. a bench, in a noisy park. mackenzie didn't need the peace of silence to ponder. she had the natural ability of focus, and could handle any sort of ruckus even if she was studying for a test, and pass with flying colors.
she placed her bag onto the wooden seat, and seated herself right after, sighing. ms. rumfallo told mackenzie that her resume was amazing, even phenomenal. however, she thought that mackenzie was too bland for the company, and they needed more flamboyance. the interviewer also told the girl that she was too minimalist, and mackenzie knew that it was just a euphemism for boring.
she sucked in her breath for the millionth time this day, and slumped in her seat, closing her eyes and travelling into a void of the unknown. sleepiness took over all her reason, and the usually paranoid mackenzie did not even think of being mugged, as she dozed off fitfully.
hours later, mackenzie woke up, yawning and stretching her back, from being in such an uncomfortable position. mid-way into her yawn, she stopped. she realized that she was sleeping on a park bench.
'a park bench? really kenz? how embarrassing is that!"
she hastily reached for her bag, letting out a sigh of relief after seeing that her objects were intact. she looked around and her eyes fixated on a boy, walking towards...her? who was he? mackenzie looked behind her to check that he wasn't going towards someone else.
the boy reached the park bench and gave a small smile towards her. mackenzie perplexed, gave a hesitant one back. the boy sat himself down, next to mackenzie.
"hi, i'm johnny. i saw you sleeping here and assumed you were tired, so i got you ice-cream. oh, and don't worry, you weren't mugged, i made sure of it!"
johnny beamed as he ended his introduction. mackenzie, still dazed, nodded and said in a quiet voice.
"thank you so much kind sir. i don't usually sleep on park benches. you see, i just got rejected from a job i really wanted."
johnny chuckled, "oh just call me john, i'm only 21! and don't worry, i don't judge pretty girls like you."
'is he flirting?' mackenzie asked herself.
she shook her sleepy head, "well, thank you for everything, john. i really appreciate it. i must get going before i fall asleep on another bench!" she joked.
johnny chuckled as mackenzie gathered her things and when she got ready to set up he called out to her, "wait! mackenzie right? i-uh, i kind of like your personality and would like to get to know you better, and-,"
mackenzie giggled, "how could i forget! i'm so incredibly rude, i'm so sorry."
she fumbled for her cell in her organized bag for a few seconds, and handed it to him. johnny pressed a few keys on the touch-screen, the numbers beeping, creating a melody.
"see you around, john!"
"you too, kenz. text me!"
mackenzie nodded and laughed, turning her head forward after, and striding happily on the smooth cement street.
the first thing kenzie did after turning the keys and opening the door to her apartment was: jump onto her worn leather couch and start up the netflix. she then decided to text johnny, excited to have met a new friend.
mackenzie couldn't get a full glimpse of john, due to the humiliation occupying her mind, but she could describe a few of his prominent features.
he had emerald green eyes. they shone all the time, even when he spoke or not. his eyes were almond shaped, delicately framing his beautiful orbs.
he had a killer jawline. mackenzie felt like she would cut her skin if she touched it.
he also had a lean, but muscular body. his torso was long.
mackenzie obviously didn't have a crush on him. she was just very observant. she could decipher someone's personality within a few minutes.
but, she couldn't quite tell what johnny was like.
