*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It's weird moving to new places. Good thing I haven't moved in 17 years.

See, I've grown up in this town. Copperfield. It's a small town where everyone knows everyone. Everyone knows everything. Sometimes.

In small towns like these, everything is magnified into something bigger than it actually is. Rumors, stories, events, etc. People are forced to become people appreciative in town like these.

My name is Carmen Lakewood. I attend the only highschool here: Copperfield Highschool. Big whoop, isn't that exciting? I'm just like everyone, everyone is like me.

I roll out of bed and I check my phone, my eyes dry from looking at the ceiling for the past hour. I open my unread text from Laney.

'Hey girl, why haven't you been at school for the past two days? People are starting to make up crazy rumors about why you're gone. Here's what's been a-happening: math test, world geo test, english homework... oh did I mention there's a new guy? New York."

I rub my eyes and I put my phone down, wondering why that would even matter to me. What's so cool about a new guy? No big deal to me, but Laney has been trying to get me a boyfriend for years. Maybe he's "the one".

I respond.

"Okay, okay, okay, and okay, I don't care. Laney, I'm trying to focus on college. Not New York boys. Not any boys! I'm going to school today. I'll see you there."

I get ready for the day, brushing my hair and teeth, putting on some mascara as I pass my mirror. I chew on my bottom lip as I try to decide what to wear. Grateful Dead hoodie and jean shorts. Cool. All set.

*~*~*~*~*~*

I get to school and I breathe in the familiar scent of PDA and depression. I sigh and I shake my head, laughing to myself. What a crap-hole.

As I'm walking to class in peace, I feel arms reach around my shoulders in an embrace. I turn around and I smile at Laney.

"Oh my God, Carmen. I'm telling you, this guy is grade-a hot, I swear. And he's nice and sweet and-"

I cut her off, "Laney, I told you that I'm busy. I don't want a boyfriend, believe me."

She sticks out her lower lip and she pouts. We look at eachother before Laney punches my arm.

"Ouch, what the fu-"

She points and she whispers into my ear, "Look, that's him... his name is Kaleb."

A boy, about 6ft, walks by, blue eyes, brown hair that isn't too long, but covers his forehead. It was wavy, light like air. Hit eyebrows were thick and well kept, and he wore jeans and a t-shirt. Laney looked at him in awe.

"Okay, and?"

Laney shoots me a look. "Okay whatever, so-rry for trying to help."

I give her a hug and I watch the back of the boy from New York. He was attractive... a little. Okay, a lot. But I look away before anyone sees me.
