Ground Zero

The day started as normal as normal can be, I clocked in for a day of patrolling my little area of the forest. As a forest ranger my days were spent walking around the forest, usually chasing off teens who took to the deep woods to smoke pot or some other annoying action, they didn't bother me much, just a little nuisance here and there. The most I would ever do is fine children who had walked off the path and gotten lost, finding them took little effort most the time, the forest was big, but easier to maneuver in. Most the times it would take little less than an hour to find the child lost and crying. All of this changed on this day.
The first feeling was the ground shaking, I lived in an area where earthquakes never happened, so this shaking gave me an instant worry. The next sensation to hit me was the sound, it was as if the loudest shotgun in the world was shot maybe 30 yards away. I sprinted for the main headquarters to find out what the hell was going on. The head quarters was chaos. People were running around in a very clear panic. I stopped a friend named Derek and asked him what was happening.

"Derek, what the hell is going on, why has everyone gone ballistic?"

"Bombs have been dropped in the city, half the city has been completely wiped. We need to get the fuck out of here."

The next memory I had was running, I needed to get home and fast. If the world was going to end, then I needed to get any supplies that I could need from my home and then escape to the world I knew best, the forest. The trip to my house took no longer than 10 minutes, I lived very close to the forest, it was basically my backyard. As soon as I stepped in the door I collected any and all supplies that I could possibly need. Canned food, water, clothes, and most importantly the rifle that hung above my bed and all the ammo I had stockpiled for this very moment. I ran back to the door and took one more look at the home that I had lived in for the past 9 years. This home held many memories of past girlfriends, parties with friends from back home, and most importantly it was the home that I took care of my mother in before she past away after a hard fight with cancer. A single tear fell from my eye for the sadness of these last moments. I then set out for the deep forest and the high mountains that inhabit the forest. They would be my sanctuary for who knows how long. I would need their protection and their comfort so that I could live through this soon to be apocalypse.
