Melting

The air smelt of moss and perfume, birds were sitting on tree branches, chirping away happily. They were in a sort-of secret field of grass that looked much like the ones in the Twilight movies.  There’s something I need to tell you, he had whispered to her in an annoyingly low voice.  What in the world could he be telling me, Juliette Ateara wondered?  There was another thing bothering Juliette, though.  How could a person smell so good, the guy sitting right next to her smelt as if he had used a whole bottle of fancy perfume this morning. He’s so cute though, but how could I like someone I don’t even know? Aaarrrggghhh! Juliette thought.  They sat on a wooden log, motionless for quite a while not saying anything.

Juliette couldn’t help remembering her 10th birthday, it had been such a disaster.  She had hugged her Aunt and had almost killed her. She followed her crying mom to her room after that, Juliette joined her mom with her own stream of tears.

“I never knew it would happen so early. Our whole family has their own set of powers, but no one has a power as powerful as yours sweetie. I just need you to cope with it for now; I’m really sorry I didn’t tell you earlier.” Juliette's mom had whispered, while crying profusely.

Juliette was seriously confused at the time, but those were the few words she would remember her whole life. She had always thought her power was terrible, but thinks of it as power she could use to help others. She was thinking deeply about her situation in the past when she was interrupted by Kenji.

“There’s something I think you should know...,” Kenji Strom almost whispered without confidence, as he fumbled with his fingers.  There was something about the way he said that, that made the hairs on the back of her spike up, like untrimmed grass.  Uh oh, here we go again, thought Juliette.  It was about four in the afternoon already and the sun was starting to settle.

Juliette was growing extremely impatient.

She stood up, exasperated, and half yelled to him, “Will you go on with whatever you have to say?”

He looked up at her with dazed, wild eyes, “You know how you're different, with your powers and everything? Like you sort of make the person unconscious with your touch? ”, he inquired.

“Mmm-Hmm,”  she replied staring up at the sky, clearly unaware that Kenji was staring at her. “What about it? ” she inquired, with an almost annoyed tone.

“Well, I have power too, which makes me immune to your touch,”  he babbled.

Juliette plopped onto the muddy ground, clearly stumped by his revelation. Could he really be immune to my touch? He’s seriously gone crazy, or maybe I have, thought Juliette.  The world was spinning around her, all she could hear was Kenji’s harmonic, angel-like voice calling out her name. She felt a bit nauseated, and her head suddenly felt extremely heavy. She had to lean her head onto the the bug eaten log to keep herself from falling over.

“Are you kidding me? ” she muttered out of bafflement, as she started to stand up

swatting the dried and crushed mud from her new Levi’s jeans. She didn’t even wait for Kenji to reply.

Juliette was utterly confused right now. She was deciding between staying and listening to all this craziness, or if she should start running like hell.  I must be dreaming, she wondered to herself.  She started to back away, her eyes wide with fear, her head felt like it was spinning as fast as a top.  Her hair was lightly flying behind her, in the humid atmosphere around her. She could hear childrens footsteps and high pitched screaming nearby, making everything seem more confusing. She started to vamoose away from him, clearly confused by the situation she was tangled in.

“Wait where are going? ” Kenji exclaimed, racing after Juliette.

“I can’t even believe this is happening to me, ” Juliette screamed back.  “Why are you even LYING to me? You know, I’m going to go home now, you are so UNBELIEVABLE!  Why can’t you just tell me the truth? It’s not possible that you’re immune to me, I mean no one IS!”  Juliette blurted out without stopping to take a breath.

Juliette was bolting down the street not caring about all the weird looks she was receiving from everyone.   Her feet was unsteady, and she felt like she was about to topple over any time.  People around her were whispering to each other, she felt overly annoyed with these extremely nosy people.  Can’t you just mind your own business, Juliette thought.  You have NO idea what is happening to me right now, Juliette wanted to scream at them.  She could hear Kenji screaming for her to “PLEASE” listen to him for “JUST ONE SECOND” which made her feel like slapping his face.

Will I ever get to my house, Juliette pondered.  It felt like it would take her an eternity to get there.  She turned her head around to see Kenji still chasing after her.  It was like they were kids playing a game of cat and dog sprinting after one another.  Her hair was flying behind her like in a Dove commercial, though the back of her tank top was soaked through with sweat.  Juliette’s mind was screaming at her, to run faster “Kenji’s catching up with you!” her mind bellowed.

Yes! I’m almost there she thought to herself.  With her brother Leo screaming in their backyard, she would be able to tell if she was almost home even if she had her eyes closed.  Juliette was desperate now, her heart was pumping at least a gazillion times per second, it practically felt like it would jump out of her.  She could smell the lasagna her mom was making, which was a really good sign, it meant she was almost home.  Her legs felt like jelly by now, please tell me I’m almost home, she pleaded. She was about to stumble into their baby blue gate when she felt someone grab her hand.  Her heart melted.
