I immediately get up, this wasn't supposed to happen. Grays, as I called those blood-thirsty monsters, were arriving fast and quick. They may be dead, but they sure can run when they smell meat nearby. My walkie talkie crackled "What is going on? What is that noise? Why is everyone panicking?" That was a lot of voices mingled together. I told Gloria that we should've gotten more high tech than a flimsy piece of metal.
I pressed that "talk" button "Get over here. A whole mess of Grays are coming from the forest! We need all the extra help you can get!" I clambered down the tower with Katie right behind me "I'll go alert everyone to go in to the emergency trapdoor." She ran toward the kitchens and I ran toward the Weaponry. Hopefully, she'll be alright. The emergency trapdoor was a place to go just in case Grays managed to sneak their creepy rotting bodies in.
Guards are rushing about, holding bows and arrows and other wicked looking weapons when I get inside. They look frantic and scared. This is the first time they've actually seen so many Grays. We are prepared for this, but still, there's a lot of noises coming over the walls and let me tell you, zombie moans and groans can make a grown man run for his mommy and still suck his thumb. They give even me the shivers.
I enter the building. Armor of all sizes lie scattered all over the floor. Sword, throwing knives and bows are scattered all around the room. It's a good thing my things are locked up. Every one shoves each other in a hurry to go to the walls and help.
I walk to my room and enter it. Sarah is playing with little dolls made of sticks "Where have you been? There is growling noises! What are they." I carry her and she buries her head in my arm. She is way to old too be carried, but I carry her anyway.
I remind her the curiosity killed the cat before reasuring her that everything was going to be alright "I'm going have to drive those noises away, okay? A guard will be in front of the door. Stay in here, okay?" She nods and goes into to her bedroom that was connected to mine. I grab all my guard things from under my bed. This armor and weapons are heavy. I lied to her about the guard being outside her room, but I lock her room just in case anyway.
I head to the walls. The wall is crawling with guards, which is an usual sight, but it was different because instead of the hard looks they always have, they were frantic and scared. They were all shooting at the grays down below. All the guards on duty that have their shift outside of the walls are being brought back inside.
I hear a terrible grating and I know the blades are up. The blades are for emergencies like this. They rise from the ground repeatedly killing Grays. I try hard not to gag at the smell of rotting flesh. I should be use to it by now, but I guess you can never be use to it. Who loves Grays?
A stair case leads up to the top of the wall. Grays are surrounding the walls and more are coming. I can see that guards are shooting like crazy to stop the zombies. Some are throwing retractable knives which come back to you when it finds its mark. This entire place would go down if we didn't stop them.
I had great accuracy. Gloria was at my side shooting arrows "Bring up the thorns!" The thorns were bid pointy things that shot out of the air that had wicked thorns covering them that made them very hard to climb over, we had to try, key word on try, and climb over them. The zombies had to get through them.
I shoot in till my fingers are sore. A kid keeps on stocking us up in weapons. He brought less and less arrows as we kept on shooting. I guess that we're running low on arrows and the zombies still keep on coming. "Why are there so many?" I ask Gloria. "They probably heard us or smelled us."
I groan, this was not my day, but of course, what is my day? Sarah was probably scared out of her wits by now and cowering in our room. I would be too if I wasn't scared of the Grays getting their filthy hands on the place I call home.
After many tired hours of fending off the zombies, the sun finally came up. Zombies are dumb, but they are creatures of the night. I like it that way. "An hour before sunset all of us will meet up at the bigger meeting room than we did yesterday." Gloria says. I walk lazily down the stairs and to the weaponry, sleepy and looking for a bed.
When I finally got back to my room, I was ready to collapse. Sarah was curled up by the door. She had fallen asleep. Her cheeks were still wet from crying. I wanted to stay here tonight, but I'm sure the Grays are going to be back and more after that. I carried her to her bed. I went to sleep on my big welcoming pillow as soon as my head hit the pillow.

When I finally woke up, it was time for dinner. I could smell the hot beef soup from all the way over here. It smelled delicious. Sarah was no where to be found. I'd have to tell someone to find her before the sun set. The cafeteria was silent and there wasn't a peep. It was half empty. You can ask to leave if you want to, but... We don't want to hold people back here. Gloria was sitting near me. I could see that she hadn't slept. Bags hung under her eyes and her hair was a little more white than usual. Things were really bad if she had spent all night planning.
I finished my soup. People were heading to the big meeting room. It could fit about a hundred people, but that's about it. I sat where the higher ranking guards were supposed to sit, near Gloria. I yawned as someone brought me a much needed cup of coffee. The bitter taste helped me snap awake.
Gloria smiled, trying to hopelessly brighten the mood "The zombies are attacking because there is no more survivors out there in the city to feed off of, at least that's what I think. The last survivor was brought in a few days ago by me. I think they've sensed us, but that does not matter now. We need all last-minute defenses on the whole night. All guards and their troops will be on duty. The blacksmiths shall be making weapons out of whatever they can. Prepare as much as you all can for the night."
Most of the guards left except me. "Gloria, what if we can't hold them back? Everything we've worked for, the crops, the order and the walls, they'll all go crashing down if they keep at coming at us like this. Sarah, she's never seen a Gray and she's scared witless of the scary noises. Her whole childhood will come crashing down."
Gloria gave me a sad smile, "She had to learn soon enough. We've all had horrble lifes, but just maybe, we can kill all of them in the city." By her tone, I doubt it.
