I walk out of the mall with my friend Crystal on a warm May Friday night. I was feeling slightly down on myself because that's the way I always felt after going to the mall with my perfect best friend. Crystal was 5'6 and had a perfect body. If that wasn't unfair enough, she had beautiful straight platinum blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Everything she tried on looked amazing on her, while I had a hard time picking out a tee shirt that looked mediocre on my small frame. My looks weren't great and my body didn't really help my case. I had curly brown hair and stormy gray eyes, which was rather bland if you asked me, and I'm only 5'2 leaving me one of the shortest juniors in my grade. Crystal attracted millions of boys, while I was lucky if one gave me a second glance while passing by. I couldn't show any signs of sadness though, because then I would get this whole spiel about how I was really beautiful and everyone should love their body, and being petite is really cute. Trust me, I'd heard it one too many times to know.
"Well that was fun!" Crystal says cheerfully. Easy for her to say. She had at least five bags filled to the top, while I had one with a shirt in it. This trip was officially a bust. It's not that I minded though, because I enjoyed Crystal's company.
"Yeah it really wa-" I was interrupted by a group of people running up to us. My face inflamed when I realized what group of people it was.
Everyone has that one group of boys at school who are inseparable and really annoying, and Franklin-Thompson School for Gifted Children's was made up of five devils- I mean boys. There's Calum, Max and Tyler, who were the quieter ones in the group, yes annoying, but not as bad as Logan. Logan was the second in command in the group. He was drop dead gorgeous, but a complete player. He had broken more hearts than anyone ever has or should. Then last but not least, the ringleader, Julian Matthews. Julian Matthews was the second most attractive boy in school next to Logan. He had long, but not in a gross way, brown hair and bright green eyes that seemed to sparkle whenever he had a mischievous grin on his face. He was tall, about six feet, and I forgot one important detail about him. I was hopelessly and unconditionally in love with him. The thing is, I knew it would never work, but couldn't help but like him. I was obsessed with everything about him. How he was surprisingly good at math, how he ran his fingers through his hair when he was talking to someone, and how he would ride on his skateboard with his friends in front of my house, which I knew he knew that he knew was my house. And now he was standing in front of me. Oh and also another fun fact; Crystal had no idea.
"Hey guys!" He exclaimed with that mischievous grin and electricity in his eyes. Despite Crystal's appearance advantage, I had one over her, and that was I had confidence when talking to boys, and she did not.
"Julian Matthews, what a delightful surprise." I said sarcastically. His grin flickered even more.
"Briana Hart, we meet again." He says, going along with the sarcastic tone. His friends smile in the background, probably to get Crystal's attention because everyone in the school knows that Logan chose her as his next victim of a heartbreak . "So, whatcha doin?" He asks suddenly casual like a nine year old boy, not a six foot seventeen year old.
"What does it look like doofus?" I tease.
"Leaving the mall, heading to your car." He says and I applaud.
"Good job Julian! Looks like that special help's working for you!!" Julian just laughs because he's out of comebacks and I know I've won this war. I turn to look at Crystal, but she's just there smiling like an idiot at Logan. She was gonna get lured in really soon and I was going to have to pick up the pieces. Great, just great. "C'mon Crystal." I say, and start to walk to Crystal's family car that her parents let her use on Friday nights. The boys followed close behind us, and let's just say I wasn't necessarily disappointed about that. We load the bags into the back seat of the car while casually joking and making small talk with the boys. The laughter and talk fades when a cop car pulls up near us. A shadow falls on Julian's face and the last thing I heard was him screaming "RUN!!"
