Chapter 1

Typical, Esme thought to herself as she jiggled the locked doorknob to the orphanage a second time, but this time, she saw two laughing faces in the locked window beside the door. She had been sneaking out past curfew again, and she knew that if she didn't get inside soon, she would be caught and she knew she'd get a beating.

"William and Faye," she hissed, "if you do not open this door, I'm going to kill you before Ms. Madelle gets a chance!". The two faces disappeared from the window. William and Faye were laughing themselves senseless. Payback for getting us in trouble last week, Faye thought, although she knew that Ms. Madelle would be merciless on any child that sneaks out after curfew.

Esme glanced up at the 5 story building. She knew there was only one way in. Once an open window was spotted, she began climbing. One hand, one foot, she repeated to herself in her mind. She got higher and higher, closer and closer, but it was that dreadful glance down that threw her off balance and sent her sailing to the ground.
