Chapter 1 - 🏹
"Carter!" I roll my eyes at the sound of my name being called, resenting to call back knowing my brother is seconds from walking in, anyway. "Hey, Carter, have you seen my Xbox controller?"
"No? How should I know?"
"Dude, I was just asking. I need it," he groans. "Harry's coming over. Wanted to show him something cool. I finally downloaded Red Dead and I'm dying to show him my-"
"Okay, Dylan, that's great and all but I really don't care, better yet, know what you're talking about. Nor do I even care enough to know."
"I gave you an Xbox for absolutely no reason. You don't even use it."
I look over at the old console, which I hardly used since my sophomore year. My brother gave it to me after getting the newest Xbox, along with some of his hand me down games. But I didn't bother since I only used it for Netflix and stuff.
"I use it, not as much as you obviously, but I also have a life compared to you," I shrug, already tired of this conversation knowing Dylan is only going to break out into a full on lesson about Xbox and stuff.
Dylan throws himself onto my bed and I groan, "Seriously Dyl? Can you like, leave?"
"Have you seen my controller?"
"I told you, no. God, just use mine!" I groan in annoyance.
"No way," He shakes his head with a disgusted face, "Yours is white, it's too feminine for my liking."
I give him a puzzled look, "That's stupidest thing you've ever said. And you say a lot of stupid shit."
"No, it's not. It's literally girly," He says with a scoff.
"Dylan, you're literally refusing to use an inanimate object for its color claiming it's too feminine. It's white. It's not like it's pink. Regardless, even if it were, you shouldn't have a fit about it. Because it's just a color-"
"All right, damn. Chill," He holds his hands up in surrender, "Geez, mom. I don't need a life lesson, I was just saying, black makes me feel more masculine."
"Oh my god, Dylan, it's just a color-"
"Jeez, Carter, chill," Dylan laughs which only aggravates me more. "Look, I don't wanna use it, okay? Besides, I can't. I don't think I can use the old controller for the new system."
I shake my head, dropping the subject before saying, "Okay, whatever. Shouldn't you be studying for your SAT's, anyway? Mom and dad said you really need to tighten up since you didn't register to take it last year."
Dylan scoffs, "I don't need to study for the SAT's, Carter, it's like baby stuff; junk I already know."
"Dylan the SAT's aren't like assessments, it's serious and really difficult. You can't just guess and Christmas tree your answers," I scold him, "The school year is almost done, you're about to graduate this year. You really need to get your shit together." It's a miracle my brother even made it this far in high school considering his grades were always marked as Non-Proficient.
My brother scowls at me, "Well, what about you? I don't see you studying and you're about to be a senior."
Dylan smirks and the excitement I have to ruin his joy is bubbling up in my insides.
"Sweet, sweet brother of mine. Your attempt at trying to turn this around me is so cute. Only I already took my SAT's in February."
Dylan's face drops instantly. He grumbles as he gets up off my bed, making his way out of my bedroom muttering whatever as he leaves.
