Captain America went back in time to return the infinity stones yes, but he also took the opportunity of being back in time to have a life with Peggy Carter, the love of his life.
"Tony and I came back from the 70's with the stone but Nat didn't. We got the gauntlet equipped with all of the stones and snapped to get you guys back. The next thing we knew the fight with Thanos came back to us. You know the rest."
Bucky looked over at Steve, both of their backs against the head board of the bed in the room they were sharing at Pepper and Morgan's house.
"Bucky, they put me in charge of taking the stones back once we get the quantum transporter operational and and .... I was thinking'" "I know," cut in Bucky. "I wouldn't be your best friend if I didn't Steve." He reached over and intertwined his fingers with Steve as Steve rested his head in the crook of Bucky's shoulder. "But you need to promise me something, just live your life with her, anonymously, don't try and create a universe where you save me any sooner than you already did in this one.". "But Buck," he leaned in and silenced Steve with a platonic peck. "Save me in some alternate timeline were we can be together like before the war or how we were in Wakanda, I don't want to be your third wheel mate. Besides in all these alternative time lines there will always be this time line where I've been the winter soldier and I've gone through the pain and torture, which means anything you do in that universe won't change this one, just think of me happy in this one, even though I hate the idea of you leaving, I won't lie. I don't want this to be the end of the line for us, but I know it is." By now their foreheads were resting against each other's. " And Steve, Give Sam the Shield, I still have some mental stuff to get through before I can handle that responsibility . Now scoot over you're on my side of the bed punk." Steve laughed, and for a moment before the silence of the night returned and Bucky rested his head against Steve's chest, he almost forgot that he'd have to say goodbye to Steve. It was something he had prepared himself for a lifetime ago back before it all when Steve was still pre-serum and again when they fought against Thanos in Wakanda, even when he walked out of the soul stone and into the battle 5 years later he walked right back into battle and didn't get an immediate reunion with Steve. Don't get me wrong as soon as the snap had defeated all of Thanos and his army and Pepper gave permission for Tony to die Steve spun around in a complete circle scanning the battle field in search of Bucky who was already walking towards him. The two met in a fierce hug. Side by side on the battlefield again,each thankful the other was still alive.
