Fate

Prologue

"Alright, class dismissed." My professor says as the other students basically sprint for the door. I gather my things and head for the welding room to make some progress on some extra credit stuff. I grab an engine and drag it to the table to work on it. I turn on some music and put on my welding mask.  After about thirty minutes of trying to fix this mess of an engine, I hear someone kick the door open. I turn around to see my best friend Xavier in his lab coat and has two bags of fast food in his hands.

"Hey, man!" He says with a smile.

"Jeez, why are you so cheery?" I say flipping the welding mask up and an eyebrow raised.

"I healed a serious wound today!" He says as he sets down a bag.

"Wow, that's cool man." I give him a small smile. I jump from feeling my phone vibrate. I look at the number.

"Josiah State Hospital?" I mumble before answering. "Hello?"

"Yes Hello, is this Liam Montgomery?" A lady with a soft voice asks me.

"Yes?" I ask worriedly.

"We have your mother here-" She says before cutting her off.

"I'll be there." I quickly say then proceeding to shakily put down the phone and getting up, "C-Can you give me a ride to the hospital?"

"Yeah man, what happened??" Xavier asks as we both leave the engineering building.

We arrive at the packed hospital and as soon as Xavier parks I ditch him and run in. I check in and anxiously follow the Nurse to my mother's room.

"M-Mom?!" I say while entering the room but get pushed back by the doctor.

"Sir, let her rest. Please take a seat and we'll explain what happened." He says putting a hand on my shoulder.

"O-Okay." I stutter and take a seat.

"Your mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she didn't want you to know but after this incident, I think it would be right to tell you and have her stay here." He babbles on and on about what to do but all I can think about is how I'm gonna be able to pay for this, insurance, and if she's going to be okay. He tells me that visiting hours are over so I should get home and rest. I head back to the lobby and I don't know if I should cry or just hit something. I find Xavier and explain what happened.

"Holy shit man, are you okay?" He asks.

"I don't know, I'm just figuring out how to pay for this. I'm going to have to drop out." I say while running my hand through my hair.

"Or you could call your dad." He suggests but shuts up after I give him the death glare.

"He doesn't care so why should I? I get he's a pro-hero and makes a lot but he'd refuse too." I groan. "I need a drink or to shoot something."

"Here, use this for the shooting range then meet me back at the apartment tonight." He hands me forty dollars. We get back to the car and head for our next destination. Xavier drops me off at the shooting range which isn't far from our place so I can walk back. I head in and pay for 15 shots with a sniper then head in. I notice someone out of the corner of my eye but don't take mind to it and head of the end of the shooting range. I hit about 9 with perfect accuracy than 6 around it.

"That's a damn fine shot you got there." I hear a ragged voice say.

"Thanks?" I say turning around to see a man about a few inches taller than me with bright red eyes.

"Are you by chance looking for a job?" he asks with a smirk.

"Depends if it pays well." I say and shrug.

"Well, what I do pays very well my friend. But do keep in mind we aren't exactly good." He says. "You're one hell of a shot, comrade. We could use that on our team."

"Thanks but no thanks, man. I think I can find a job that doesn't sound sketch and pays well." I say while putting the gun down leaning on the wall.

"You wouldn't want something to happen to your sweet mum do you though?" he chuckles a bit, I freeze up.

"How the fuck do you know that??" I ask while looking at him dead in the eyes.

"I have my ways, Mr. Montgomery." He says then putting out his hand to shake. "Now would you like to join us?"

"F-Fine, just don't mess with my family." I shake his hand.

"Great! Now my names Killian and I have a feeling this is going to turn out fabulously." He grins. "Find me at the old warehouse on Jade street tomorrow!"

The Killian guy leaves and I can finally relax. Who the hell was that and what the hell did I get into?
