"Are you nervous for your first day?" My mum asked as we shuffled around the kitchen.
"Mhm, but I'm ready. I'm finally finished with Uni and feel confident in what I learned." I smiled, picking up the cup of tea and taking a gentle sip.
"That's good. Are you nervous about working with them?" I could see the hidden smirk on my mum's face. Whenever I had applied for an intern position with One Direction's management team I never in a million years thought I would actually get it. I was fresh out of uni with little to no field experience.
I truly thought it was a prank at first till I went in for an interview and realized very quickly that it wasn't.
"I mean, kind of. They're huge right now. Arguably the most famous people in the world at the moment. They've only released 2 albums so far and this is their second tour so they are really on the rise still. I'm still trying to figure out how I fit into this mix." I mumbled, the steam from the tea cup hitting my face.
"Well," My mum placed down the rag and walked over to me grabbing my shoulders. "Just go in their with confidence and own this job. You are incredible and I think you'll do amazing." She leaned in and gave me a kiss on the forehead before pulling away.
"Thanks but I'm pretty sure you have to say that because you're my mum." I laughed, rolling my eyes. "Alright, I should get going. I have to be at the office by 8. I want to beat the morning traffic." I gave my mum a hug before collecting my backpack and purse and heading out the door.
I made the 30 minute commute into downtown London and found myself getting more and more nervous.
I was 15 minutes early so I parked and pulled out my phone facetiming my best friend.
"Val, I am proper freaking out." I breathed as my best friends disoriented face came across the screen.
"Babe, it's not even 8. My brain doesn't function this early." She groaned, sitting up in her bed. "But, you'll be fine. Go manage the fuck out of those hotties and give Liam my number." She winked making me giggle.
"Val, I told you I'm not even sure if I'll be working directly with them. They haven't assigned me to my department yet." I rested my head against the window as she talked me down from my nerves.
"You'll be amazing. Love you!" She blew a kiss at the screen before hanging up.
I took a deep breath before making my way out of my car and over to the elevator. The ride up to the office was filled with jitters and the thought of ditching.
Was I in way over my head with this? Should I have not accepted the job?
The elevator doors opened to reveal the bustling modern styled office. I made my way out and was surprised at how loud and crowded the office was at this early hour.
"Uh, hi." I walked up to the receptionist trying not to look like a nervous wreck. She held up her finger and finished her phone call before hanging up.
"How can I help you?" She questioned, glancing up at me.
"I'm here for my first day. Not sure where I should go." I smiled, trying to seem friendly.
"Ugh, okay. Hold on. What's your name?" She asked, rolling her eyes as the phone began to ring repeatedly in the background.
"Ruby Woods." I said trying to tune out the madness happening behind me. She typed away on her computer for a few minutes before looking up at me.
"Okay, go down the hall to office 303. That's Ms.Greene's office and she will walk you through everything and all the questions you have." She flashed me a quick smile before answering the phone.
I nodded and maneuvered through all the scattered employees down the hall to office 303. I took a pause before knocking and hearing a faint voice call to come in.
I pushed the door open and saw a woman in a tight red dress and straight golden brown hair sitting behind a large glass desk. "Ruby, so good to see you." She grinned, standing up and walking over to me.
She kissed both of my cheeks before instructing me to sit down.
Ms.Greene was the woman I did my interviews with and for some reason she really, really liked me.
"Are you ready for your first day?" She questioned, leaning back in her tall backed chair.
"Yeah, still can't come to wrap my head around it to be quite honest. I'm like in shock that I got this position." I laughed, feeling my palms get sweaty.
"Well, I just knew the boys would love you and that's what's important. You're lucky you're cute." She laughed, winking at me and pulling out folders. "So we're just going to go over some paper work and logistics."
For the next hour or so I was signing a million different forms about social media and privacy policies and paparazzi and everything you could think of when working with famous people.
"So the boys are starting their second world tour and that's why you're here." Ms.Greene said after putting up all of the paperwork. "On their last tour there was a lack of control with the boys. Their publicity was a mess especially when they got to the states." She got up and turned on her keurig, brewing a cup of tea.
"I remember. We looked at it in my public relations class." I told her, thinking about that semester of Uni.
"Right. So, this tour we've hired two people to control the boys and make sure there's limited bad publicity. We understand that there's going to be some but watching the boys and keeping them under control will help." I was listening to her but my mind was starting to wonder.
It sounded like she hired me to be a babysitter. I'm not a babysitter. I went to school for almost 5 years to get this degree in business management and public relations and I'm not going to be some babysitter.
"Now, to discuss your pay." She pulled out a new binder and began to flip through the lamented pages. I looked up my face showing even more confusion. I had thought this was an unpaid internship that turns into a paid internship after the tour if my performance was good.
"So our first option is 4,000 a week plus no expense on traveling, hotels or food. Second option is 5,000 a week and only hotel is covered. Third option is-"
"I'll do the first option." I smiled, cutting her off. I guess for 4,000 a week I could be a glorified babysitter. And, who knows. Plus, this will be the easiest job in the world so it'll make me look good and hopefully they'll offer me a real job after this tour.
"Perfect. Well, the boys start their tour in 3 days so today you'll be spending some time with the other intern, Ellie, and getting comfortable with each other. You'll be spending a lot of time together and basically rooming together for the next 8 months."
"Sounds good. Thank you again, Ms.Greene. I really appreciate this opportunity." I smiled, extending my hand to her.
"Please, call me Tricia." She smiled, taking my hand and shaking it. "Now go head down the hall to Room B. Ellie should be there by now. She had her first day yesterday." I said thank you about a million more times before making my way down the hall.
I felt myself getting dizzy as I wandered the halls looking for Room B. I stumbled down another corridor still uncertain at where I was going and where I even came from at this point.
I heard a shout of laughter from around the corner so I made my way toward it in hopes to find Room B. I get distracted from a banging sound behind me and loose my footing falling into something hard.
"Fuck, sorry." I mumbled, quickly standing up and fixing my shirt.
"No worries. You look lost." The thick British accent made me freeze before looking up. Are you Ruby or Ellie?" He questioned, pulling his lip in between his teeth.
"Ruby." I said, trying to hide the shakiness in my voice.
"Hello Ruby, I'm Harry. I believe you're meant to be my pretend girlfriend."
An interesting little idea I thought of.... stay tuned for drama xx
