It was dark and the wind howled loudly keeping Chrissy awake. As she lay she said to herself.
" They are not real. They are all in your head" Over and over she chanted the same lines. Bang! A bird hit the window and Chrissy shot straight up and stayed there sitting in her bed like she had a metal pole in her back. She heard a door open, that must be her parents. They went out earlier to some party her mom's boss invited them to. Something was off. The voices? The voices! There were about seven people. She heard her mom, crying, maybe? Her dad didn't have his deep voice it was more sorrowful. What was going on? Chrissy slowly got out of bed and quietly went down two or three steps. There stood her mom, her dad and three masculine guys and a lady. Everyone except her parents were wearing ski masks. One had a gun! Chrissy was shaking. She finally clued in, this was a robbery.
"Get down on your knees" The female said it, she looked as if she led the band of robbers.
"Is anyone else here?" The third guy asked as the others looked back at him. Her parents eyed each other. Her dad slowly shook his head then her mom said with a gentle voice.
" No, we are here alone." The men looked back at her mother almost as if they knew she was lying. The female chuckled.
"Do you think we are amateurs?" She made a pouty face and spoke as if her mother was a child." We know things. We know about your safe full of cash." That's the first Chrissy had heard of a safe." And we know about the child." Now the men looked confused but Chrissy's mother did not give up.
" Wow! You must be amateurs because if you weren't you would know she is at a friends." Her mom and the female were now bantering.
"Oh ya?"
"Ya!'" Chrissy was frozen in place thinking of telling her mother to shut up.
"So what is she is at a friends?" The female seemed cocky now, "You wouldn't mind us going and getting her rag doll. You know, the one with the pink shirt." Her mother's eyes widened. Chrissy had that doll since she was little. Now her mother was a little shaken.
"Pfft." Her mother tried to snicker. "You think a little doll is going to make me scared." Her father laughed and then quickly looked down scared of what may happen. Chrissy got up and quietly walked off and went into her bedroom. She started talking to herself.
"Where?" She said."Where do I hide. My bean bag!" Chrissy ran over to the corner of the room. Unzipped the bean bag and got in. Then she heard thumping and instantly she knew what it was. They were coming up the stairs.
Thump, thump, thump, creak.
They were now in her room. They quietly walked over to her bed.
"What? She isn't here!" Chrissy couldn't see but she could tell it was one of the guys.
"Maybe we shouldn't have come I told you it was a bad idea." Another guy said but he sounded almost apologetic and she could hear in his voice that he wasn't doing this willfully.
"Shut up Jay! You have no say! Not after you stabbed us in the back last time!" The woman was starting and argument.
"It was an accident!" She couldn't see him but she felt him, felt what he felt, he was holding back tears.
"You call letting a boy go and telling the cops our identities and accident!?!"
"I didn't know any better!"
"Pfft, sure..." The woman was getting restless."She isn't here let's go." The left not a moment to soon, Chrissy popped out of the bean bag and vomited all over. She went back to the stairs. Her parents were unconscious on the floor and the gang of robbers flew out the door with a bag full of what she assumed to be Money. She went to her parents and called the cops, her parents went to the Hospital but she stayed home, she didn't know how she felt what Jay felt but she did and that was new. She was old enough that she could stay home alone but she did not want to, not after what just happened so after twenty minutes she left. At this point it was about 12:45 which meant it was dark which also meant it was cold. She went to the only place she knew, her aunts. When she got there her aunt sent her straight to bed and told her that they would talk about it in the morning.
