“Mandy!” I screamed as I walked over to Amanda, there was only a little light in the room and the floor was hard and rocky as usual.
“Karen, you know I don’t like when you call me Mandy, especially when you scream it across the room”, Amanda said with a stern look on her face
“Whatever Amanda, what do you want to do on our day off”, I said as Amanda and I walked out to our headquarters. “I wanted to do something fun on our day off”, I sighed. In our colony we each get one day off a year from our daily duties. Amanda and I are school teachers which means we teach the young ones the 4 rules,1. Don’t talk to humans EVER
2. Stick with your job
3. Behave and talk when spoken to around the Queen
4. Never leave headquarters without signing out“We should go to the hill across the street”, I gasp. This was probably my best idea yet but Amanda looked unsure.
“I don’t know Karen; I’ve only left the hill once, for that one school trip, do you think it’s safe?” Amanda asked still looking unsure,
“Of course it’s safe, we will just go to the hill across the street we will be fine”, I ensured Amanda.
By the time we made it out of the hill we were half way to the hill across the street. “It’s so beautiful out here”, Amanda said in awe. But then everything went dark and shady kind of like the inside of our hill, as I looked up there was this very large creature with only four legs and its face was too high up to see but looked rather ugly, I think they called them humans. I suddenly got scared they were the most dangers creatures out there. “Umm, Amanda, don’t look now but there’s a human beside us” I said calmly, even though inside I was filled with fear the way light fills a dark room.
“Karen”, Amanda said, her face was drowning in shock and horror.
“Let’s just keep walking, we’re almost there, we can make it Amanda”, I said with positivity added to my small voice, but in reality I know just as much as she does I wasn't positive if we could actually make. It looked like Amanda was going to give up turn around and go back.
“Ok let’s get moving before we get stepped on”, said Amanda looking back at the human. Amanda’s face wasn’t filled with shock anymore it was filled with anxiety and worry.
Walking with your fears gets easy when you had been walking forever. I felt invincible walking with my head and my antennae high, suddenly my confidences came crashing down like the rain that is now hitting my head, the rain was cold making it hard to move.
“Karen the rain is to cold we have to turn back”, Amanda said. I couldn't give up now; I meant to say out loud but the thought stayed in my in my head. I was almost there, what is the point of giving up now I can’t give up now. Why can’t I give up now, why can’t I give up and just turn back, I just realise that I can’t give up because I’ve been through so much so why stop now. I am a creature of habit, all of the colony are, we do everything the same and one day a year I get to do something different ,just thinking about freedom and change makes me something foreign.
“Karen”, I heard Amanda from a distance, “Karen, Karen wait look out…” I heard again. I couldn’t see or heard anything now,
I wonder what the ant hill a cross the street looks like
