Waking up in this bedroom, my new bedroom for the first time in a decade alarmed me. My feet move faster than my mind carrying my from the bed to the bathroom in seconds. I splash cold water on my face repeatedly hoping it wakes me up. I take a seat on the toilet and hold my head in my lap. My mind traces everything from yesterday back. Piling everything into my Grandma's CRV, the doll, being in the house again. My thoughts are interrupted by Destiny bursting in. I stand up quickly."Sorry, I didn't know you were in here." she says applying mascara, her mouth in a perfect o. I haven't seen her wear any makeup at all since our aunt forced her to apply some for Mom's funeral. "I was just about to come wake you up." she says while twisting the top back on the bottle. "We're going shopping." she says and walks out the door back to her bedroom. I follow her having to jog to keep up with her quick strides.
"Wait we're what? And when did this happen?" I ask pointing up and down at her. She scowls at me.
"I know Mom taught you not to point. It's rude" she spits before smiling again. She grabs her brush and strokes lightly through her curled black hair. "And I said we're going shopping. We need to move on, and that means getting rid of most of the things from before." Like always her eyes drop to the floor, this time they brighten and she looks up at me. "I just had the perfect idea. Here you wear this." She walks to her closet and pulls out her favorite mustard sweater that I love and a pair of ripped skinny jeans, throwing them at me. My confused expression speaks for itself, "Like I said we need to move on. It's not new to me but to you it is." she smiles for probably the tenth time since I've woken up.
I slowly turn around and pad back to my room. What the actual fuck just happened and more importantly what happened to Destiny? I shake my head attempting to clear my thoughts. I look around my room taking in the mess I have yet to declutter. My OCD overwhelms me and I hurriedly put my outfit on, slipping the converse on from yesterday. The clacking of heels on the stairs ring through the house.
I follow the sound and see Duke and my grandma sitting at the island, Destiny looking in the fridge. I have never been more confused in my entire life. Everyone's acting like nothing has changed and it's been like this forever. Duke motions for me to come sit with them. Grandma presses a wet kiss to my forehead making me cringe and wipe it away.
"How about some breakfast? I made scrambled eggs." she says laughing from my reaction. I shake my head and politely decline.
"Thank you but I don't eat that. I'm actually a vegan." I say proudly. My Grandma's eyes light up and she smiles.
A scoff comes from across the kitchen. "That's right, I forgot about that. You and your veganism." she rolls her eyes and turns to Duke. "When she was eleven, her class went on a trip to a farm. Her being the nosy person she is walked away from her group and into a different barn. I guess she saw some pigs or something hanging upside down bleeding into a bucket." she laughs. "After that her and mom both became vegans. Dad and I always thought they were crazy." The way she speaks of our parents hurts me a little, but the way her eyes light up spark some joy in all of us. I can tell.
"Well I think that's great Hope. You're really taking charge, making a change." He smiles and pats my back. "You know I used to be a vegan too. Well a pescatarian back when I lived in Greece."
"That's actually amazing. I forgot you lived there. I actually remember you telling us about that years ago" I smile thinking about the memories. "Honestly I would love to hear more, but the look on Des' face is telling me we better leave soon." I say and hug them both before walking to the garage behind my sister.
"Des?" she asks as we climb in Duke's jeep.
"Yeah, idk it kinda felt right to say it just then." I say louder than I would like. I didn't the jeep to be that loud turning on. "Why do you not want me to call you that? I mean I know it's what M-" she cuts me off.
