Little Avis, the 16-year-old was the baby of the family and he loved it. He loved being taken care of by his Dad, two brothers, and one sister. All four were very protective of Avis since their mother picked on him so bad when she had been living with them.

His mother thought that he was weak and useless, she got arrested for child abuse 7 years after he was born.  After 4 months in prison, she was killed by an inmate. She had no funeral, she had told her family that she would kill them all when she got out of prison. They refused to forget the threat and said that she didn't deserve a funeral. It had crushed Avis, he had loved his mother so much and always thought that the pain she inflicted on him was for learning and was a good thing.

Avis was sitting on the floor playing a game of go fish with his older sister Maya. She smiled as Avis slapped down his last match. "There! I win!" He grinned at the girl.

Maya stood up, "Good job, Avis, you won again," She chuckled and ruffled the small boy's short brown hair, and pulled him to his feet.

Avis' father, David, walked out of the kitchen with an apron on. "I'm making dinner, go fetch the boys from the park." He ordered placing his hands on his hips like a mom.

Maya nodded and lead Avis to the door. They had to walk to the park, which was about a mile away.

Maya sped up and was walking far ahead of Avis. She was soon out of his view. He called out her name loudly but there was no answer. Avis started to get nervous. Usually, Maya would have answered immediately, so her absent response scared him a little.

Avis' pace got slower as he entered a part of his neighborhood that he had never seen before. It looked run down and sad. The houses had chipped paint and looked neglected. Avis hated the sight of neglected objects and homes, it made him feel sad and he wanted to fix them. He continued to look at all of the sad houses.

His mind drifted far off as he studied each house. Some had broken cars in the driveways and others had nothing but a few empty tires. He frowned at the sights of all of this. He continued to walk until he heard screaming, a woman screaming. The screaming seemed to be coming from one of the sad houses. The house looked a little better than the others, the paint was chipped but all the windows were intact and the lawn was mowed. It was about a block away from the other houses.

Avis slowly got closer, the screaming continued. He stood in front of the house for a second then sneakily walked to the window close to the door. Avis peeked in, A man was holding a kitchen knife and holding to a young woman's throat. The woman's blonde hair was messy and her face was a little red from screaming.

Avis watched in horror. The man pushed the knife into her throat, blood started to bubble at the woman's cut. Her screams were soon drowned out by her coughing and choking on her own blood. There were a few more moments of the woman's agony and then it was over. She slid to the floor, she was dead. her lifeless eyes stared at Avis.

Avis was stunned, he held back vomit and tears. He couldn't move at all. Then the man slowly turned his head and looked at Avis. He grinned widely. Avis' eyes widened and backed up a few steps. He soon broke into a full sprint.

Avis ran back the way he came, adrenaline was pumping through his veins. He refused to stop, he refused to slow down until he saw his house. He ran and ran until...there! The small baby blue house was close! He could see it! He ran to the door and pounded on it.

"Dad! Dad!" He screamed between labored breaths.

Avis' father opened the door quickly, he knew something was very wrong. Avis fell forward into his father's arms. He was so happy to be home. So happy to be alive and with his dad. Nothing was as good as being safe and held by someone you love. Avis fell deep into the dreamless sleep pulling at him the second he closed his eyes in his dad's arms. He let go all of his fear, he felt okay because all of the negativity was gone, just happy things remained.
