I finally reached the front of the school building. What seemed like forever was in reality two minutes. I opened the door and slowly stepped in before observing my new environment. New floors, bigger lockers, a big hallway, the hallway even had that new school smell. Whatever that meant, I guess. Not that I came from a small school but transferring from a private, Catholic school to a public school made all the difference. I took in my new surroundings and breathed in one big breath the last time. Everything will be fine I though to myself. You're going to do great as I rethought my mom's words to me from our car ride. As I slowly accepted my situation, I noticed that there weren't any students in the hallways and wondered where everyone could be. I looked down at my watch and saw that the time was 8:05.
"8:05?!?! I'm late for my first day!"
I quickly ran, well at least attempted to because I decided that it would be smart to wear wedges on the first day of school along with my white dress. I fought hard to not trip and keep the white bow in my hair from slipping onto the ground. I sprinted to the office heavily breathing as the wind swooshed from one area to the next. I bombarded the office door heavily panting as I tried to talk to the office staff and catch my breath at the same time.
The secretary looked puzzled and turned red with confusion as she saw my out of breath and panting.
"Do you know where Principal Wart's office is.. by any chance?" I spoke as I tried to finish my sentence and gasping for air.
"In the back, miss..
"Mara. Mara Hillsman".
"Well, Ms. Mara. Mara Hillsman. Welcome to Bartlett High".
I made a quick dash to Principal Wart's office hoping to not even be later to class than I already was.
I finally reached his office making every turn and diagonal with precision as I bursted through his office door.
A portly, older man with balding hair looked up at me with confusion as the door slam shut behind me and I was once again breathing heavily.
"Can I help you, miss?" The portly man answered.
I swallowed a little air and breathed before speaking, wanting to get all of my thoughts out clearly so that I would be able to get to class.
"My name is Mara Hillsman. I just moved here from New York, and I need to speak with Principal Warts so that I can get my schedule and find my class without being even more late than I already am".
"Well, Miss Martha, you're looking at him".
"My name's Mara".
"Of course it is. I'll escort you to your first class".
"Thank you so much, sir. Excuse me, Principal sir. Oops, I meant Principal Warts."
"It's okay. Don't stress so much about it. I know you're new here and everything".
"It's that bad, huh?"
"Not terribly, Maria".
"It's, Mara."
"Right... well, it looked like you'll be in Mr. Simmons class for homeroom."
"Interesting", I replied thoughtfully.
Needless to say, that homeroom assignment would indeed change my life forever.
