Shit. That wasn't good. A demon appearing, right after I'd stepped out of the boundaries of the Haven? Brian's status of protector couldn't help me out here. Not when I'd left of my own accord.
I'd pressed my right food as hard as I could on reverse, and shot out of my parking space. The demon disappeared in a ripple motion, meaning she'd Transt. Transt is a different form of Transportation, where the person can make themselves disappear and appear in a different place at will. Only demons have the skill. Like only us Angels can fly, even though demons have wings too.
I skidded to a stop and looked around me hastily, hyperventilating and scared. I'd never been face-to-face with a real demon before then, only knowing about them from stories Brian told me after school hours when we'd retreat to the basement under the school.
Okay, that sounded vaguely pedophilic. But no, it's where we lived, because we couldn't leave the school lest we be attacked. Demons can't get into a Haven, like Angels can't get into Hell unless we're Fallen. There's a strict set of rules placed down to the Divine setting foot on Earth.
I whipped my head around every way, but I could not see the demon anywhere. Taking a deep breath, I drove out of the parking lot and to the street. Brian would leave about once a month to gather supplies for us, and sometimes he'd let me go with him.
'It's dangerous,' he'd tell me when I begged to go to a party with a friend. 'There's no telling what's waiting for us outside the boundaries. There are too many risks and you're not strong enough to go out by yourself.'
There are only limited things that can kill an Angel. A demon is one of them. I've heard the stories. Another one is the Hellish Beast. Mutants that live to serve demons. Terrifying, and powerful.
What the hell have I done? It's a thought that's played through my mind more than a million times since I left the Haven.
I wasn't looking where I was going, which wasn't a danger for me since Angels can't die in car crashes, but it was stupid because of the mundanes on the road. I just turned my head to the front of the car when it happened.
There was a loud screeching noise that pierced my ears like hot irons and the resulting boom as the mundane car coming towards me couldn't brake fast enough and plowed into my car. I was thrown forward, the seatbelt cutting into my flesh and my head hitting the dashboard. After regaining my breath, I slammed on the driver door, which was stuck shut. Were the people I hit okay? I was driving on the wrong side of the road, I was going to be in some deep shit.
I could hear sirens in the distance, and thought, that didn't take long. It only took me a few seconds to realise demons possess the ability to imitate whoever they want, and I've known more than one situation where they've posed as emergency workers to prey on the weak and injured. They'd load them into the ambulance, then instead of taking them to the hospital, they'd take them somewhere recluse and devour them.
I had to get them out of the car.
I pounded on my door, screaming as loud as I could, hoping a mundane from one of the stopped cars around me would get out and help. Thankfully, He answered my prayers, or else I'd be talking to him when I eventually went home.
A mundane boy who looked aound my age - and hot - started tugging on the handle to the door. After a few pulls, the door legitimately came off in his hands, and he threw it so it screeched across the bitchamen, ending up against the car I ran into.
That is no mundane boy. No mundane is that strong.
He held out his hand to me and we locked eyes. I felt the breath I just regained leave my body again. He was beautiful. Gorgeous midnight blue eyes, so dark they were almost black. Stunning black hair with red tips.
And that was when I realised. This boy. He had to die.
I screamed and pushed him away from me as hard as I could. Two at the same time? What was this? Was I some sort of demon-magnet?
I got out the car, prepared to run. For a moment, I hesitated, glancing back at my car, suddenly sad that I'd crashed such a beauty. But I knew Brian would find it and repair it. Hold it for however long it took me to get back, if I survived out here.
I took off towards the mundane car I ran into. Making it easier for me, the doors had already been torn off, leaving the passenger vulnerable inside. I glanced around the interior. A female in front of me, in the drivers seat, and in the back, two children around six. My heart went out to them. I was sent down here to protect the children from the demons. That's who I am. At home, my job was to take children's souls and lead them to Heaven.
Leaving the mother in the front seat for the moment, I ripped open the back doors and pulled out the two unconcious children, who were limp in my arms. I closed my eyes and concentrated.
I could feel their spirits, till resting in their bodies. Their souls were weak, but were responding to my touch. They were alive. I dragged them out of the car, keeping an eye on the demon boy in case he decided to attack me in front of everyone. He stood, not watching me, but watching our surroundings. Sudden fear spiked my heart. Was he waiting for back up to ambush me? Was I right about the demons impersonating ambulance officers?
Speaking of that, they pulled up right at the same second I was having doubts about them. Two men hopped out of the front cab as a female opened up the doors on the back.
I let go of a breath I didn't realise I'd been holding. They were mundanes. Perfectly safe. I let the two men get the children into the back of the ambulance and went to check on the mother. Adults weren't my speciality. I couldn't sense them like I could children. However, I did know how to check a pulse.
I followed the line of the womans thumb to her wrist, where I would usually find a pulse fluttering underneath my fingers.
Except, there was no pulse.
Arms caught me as my knees buckled. Oh, those poor children. Now that don't have a mother. And I could tell, by touching them, that their father had abandoned them a long time ago.
"Thanks, but I'm fine," I muttered to the person holding me. They didn't let go. About to unleash one of my angry retorts I whipped around to face-
demon boy.
I started thrashing, trying to get out his grip.
He opened his blood red lips and said, "you know you're being followed, right?"
